Richard McDougall Obituary

McDOUGALL, Richard
Richard passed on a beautiful fall afternoon after a long battle with Dementia on September 29, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife Marsha, daughters Erin, Kelley (Shawn), Lindsay, first wife Barbara, brother Ian, niece Katelyn (Ryan), sister-in-law Katie (Rick), brother-in-law Tim and many extended family and friends.
Richard was born in Toronto and a few short years later his family moved to Ottawa when his father Robert was offered the founding English Professor position at Carleton University. Richard spent all his school years in Ottawa including obtaining his Bachelor's degree in Geography at Carleton University. His love for the west coast began when spending summer holidays on Savary Island at his Grandparents' summer home. While going to Carleton he spent his summers working at Chateau Lake Louise. He held many positions working in the hotel, including one year on the opening team where they had to shovel their way into the hotel. He loved Lake Louise and spoke of the wonderful friends he made, and the joy of hiking in the mountains. He and Barbara then moved to Victoria where their 3 daughters were born. Richard was a dedicated father and was involved in all his daughters' varying interests; long days at the gorge rowing club cheering on his twin girls, coaching Erin's baseball team, refereeing soccer games and always responding to weekday lunch requests. He was always there.
Richard worked for a short time selling the first ATM's to banks across California. He then returned to the Hotel/Restaurant industry in Victoria. In 1991 Richard began his 20 year career at Monk Office Supply. He excelled at sales and for the majority of his career he was their #1 sales person, mainly because he cared about his many customers and the people with whom he worked. During those years he was blessed to meet his dear friend Jim Potts.
Marsha and Richard started their life together in the mid 90's. They made an amazing team. Richard was instrumental in supporting Marsha in her real estate career; taking photos, joining her at every open house and helping in any way he could. In 2004 they bought their 26' Tollycraft which they named Rejuvenation. Marsha continues to cherish the memories of the many times they spent in Tod Inlet and touring the Victoria coastline. Then in 2012 they bought a vacation home in Palm Springs. Richard loved the heat and the desert.
Unfortunately in his mid 60's Richard was diagnosed with Dementia.
Richard's family want to thank the staff at Selkirk Senior Village for all their compassion and support over the last 3 years.
In lieu of flowers or donations we would like you to do something special for yourself and your loved ones.

Deeply saddened to hear of Richard's illness and passing. Richard was a mentor to me at Monk Office and continued to be one even after I had moved onto another career. I feel very fortunate to have known him and learned from someone who had such exceptional work ethic and dedication to his customers; I've missed our lunches over the past few years. Holding his family and friends in my thoughts at this time.

My heart is aching and has a space where once, love of my wonderful best friend Richard lived. Now it holds memories, which are numerous beyond telling, very sweet, but no substitute for the man. Marsha, Erin, Kelley and Lindsay I am proud of how you handled these past few years. I know they were tough, but you rose above it all. You are forever part of my family in my mind. Love you all!

I am very sad to hear about Richards passing & convey my thoughts & prayers to Marsha & family. I first met Richard when i was the Purchasing Manager at Saanich Peninsula Hospital & Richard was our salesman from Monk Office Supply. Richard & i hit it off right away & had a great friendship for over 29 years. He was truly a real professional in every way & a pleasure to do business with. Rest in peace my good friend.

Sorry for your loss Marsha. I have very fond memories of Richard from my own time working in sales with Monks. He truly was the number one sales rep because he was good with people but he also hustled.

I remember Richard to be kind and funny and full of life!

Thoughts and prayers are with you Marsha and all of your family.
