Barry (Sam) Sutherland

Yesterday

The Sutherland Clan of Alan(Sam) ,Barry(Sam) Janet, and Lyn and all of our partners and children will greatly miss Morrie. His wife , Margaret Anne West , is our big sister.Morrie was a true gentleman from the old school. He was a cruiser, never blew his own trumpet, modest to the core. I really only found out about most of his exceptional life and talents at his funeral service. He was a seamless fit into the Sutherland Clan for his warm and casual nature, his humour, and his acceptance of anybody, warts and all. He brought lots of joy and great memories into the life of our Margaret Anne, and we thank him for that. Top bloke all round. We will miss him . Cheers

Including a apprenticeship i worked for Ward Chandler several times 1964-1992 Morrie and Dave were good bosses and ran a good electrical business.Morrie Chandler had a great sense of humour as well being great at business and was a very good electrician.Got great memories of time i spent with Morrie Chandler its a big loss to motor sport rallying and to the electrical industry he was best in both fields.Bob Hancox

With the death of Morrie Chandler, motorsport has lost a man of enormous character and ability. No matter how important he became in the international motorsport world, Morrie remained the down-to-earth guy from Auckland - keen rally competitor, gifted administrator. He always found time to talk to me as a motorsport reporter. My most vivid memory was when he was Vice-President of the FIA, on his way to some important meeting in Europe. I pestered him for an interview and he agreed, telling me to be at Auckland airport. We met to discuss my questions at a coffee shop in the food court, rubbing shoulders with the public. How many sports administrators of global status would do that? With Morrie, there was no fobbing off, no overblown sense of his own importance. I was indebted then and I remain so. My respect for Morrie Chandler will never fade. He was one of the best people I have met in decades in motorsport journalism. Mike Stock, former Editor of NZ Motoring News and NZ Auto Trader.

Requiem
They say "the lighthouse-keeper´s world is round -
The only lighthouse keeper that I know
Inhabits space, his feet well clear of ground.
I say he is of light, of midnight snow.

The other lighthouse keeper - he they say
Whose world is round - is held responsible
For manning his one light by night; by day,
For polishing his lenses, bulb and bell.
My man, my friend who lately leaves, is quite
Another type. He climbs no spiral stairs:
But go he does, for good, to man the night;
To reappear, among his polished stars.

Morrie's firm was the electrical subbie on several of the Mainzeal projects I worked on back in the day (80's and 90's). Morrie was always great to deal with, a real gentleman, one of the standout people from those days.

CHANDLER, Maurice (Morrie). A quiet presence in our noisy family - thank you Morrie for teaching us that the secret to success is just getting on with it and to take time to appreciate how lucky we are. But most importantly, thank you for making our Mum and Grandma so happy for the past 20 years. Nickie, Greg, David and Claudine, Ryan, Cara, Zoe, Jaimie and Toby.
