Carrie Johnson Obituary

Carrie Francine Booker Johnson, 81, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at Heritage Inn Assisted Living Facility in Charlottesville, Virginia.

She was born on August 7, 1943 in Staunton, Virginia to the late Thelma (Miller) Booker and Frank Booker.

Carrie was very active in her high school days at Staunton’s Booker T. Washington H.S. where she graduated and was crowned Ms. Booker T. Washington and this was a special highlight for her. She was an excellent student and weekly engaged in walking to the Staunton Public Library from her home on Stafford Street to check out books. She had a voracious appetite for learning and received personal enjoyment through reading a range of literary themes. She attended Howard University and worked at the Library of Congress and later held positions as a secretary for a Community Action Organization in Alexandria, Virginia and also worked as a caregiver.

She was deeply grounded in her Pentecostal faith. In her early years, she was a member and worshiped at the First Church of God and Christ in Staunton, Virginia. Her faith was always primary in her life and she enjoyed bible scriptures and gospel music. One of her favorite spiritual songs was “Cooling Waters” by the Williams Brothers.

Carrie had a zest for life and loved all genres of music, dancing, singing, and good food. She had a love for cats and truly prized her two cats, Bootsie and Patches. When they were living, they brought her a lot of joy. She also was a fan of whimsical stuffed animals. She had a funny sense of humor and was very direct in expressing herself. In recent years as Carrie’s health declined, she looked forward to family visiting with her.

She is predeceased by her parents; husband, Roosevelt Johnson; maternal and paternal grandparents; sister, Ruth Booker; nephew, Van Dorn Early and niece, Joyce J. Perry.

She is survived by two sisters, Imogene Booker Perry of Staunton and Geraldine Booker Early of Bowie, Maryland; nieces, Sybil T. Early of Chicago, Marsha L. Curry (Aubrey) of Bowie, Md; Judy Perry of Staunton; nephew, Lewis C. Booker (Myrtle) of Stratford, Ct.; cousins, Sheila V. Ahmadi, Christine M. Crawford, Naomi C. Smith all of Staunton; a host of other cousins and extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 415 N. Augusta Street, Staunton with Bishop Michael A. Turner, Sr. officiating. Committal will follow immediately at Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of her cousin, Christine M. Crawford at 1413 Aiken St., Staunton on Friday October 18, 2024 from 3 pm to 6:00 pm.
