Donald D. Rockey, 97, of Montpelier passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, at Parkview Region Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was born on Nov. 21, 1926, in Edon, Ohio, to Clinton C. and Katherina (Bauer) Rockey. Don graduated from Montpelier High School in 1944 and then he went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army during WW II. On Dec. 5, 1947, he married Luella M. Scott in Montpelier and she preceded him in death on Nov. 23, 2023.
Don retired in 1981 as a machinist for Hause Machines in Montpelier after 29 ½ years. Prior to Hause Machine, he was a truck driver for The Montpelier Creamery. Don was a former Superior Township Trustee serving for 12 years from 1977-1989.
Don was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Montpelier, serving as former President and every other office except for the treasurer. For many years, he took most excellent care of the physical aspect and custodial duties of the church. Don was also a member of the Edon American Legion Post no. 662.
He is survived by two daughters, Beverly (William) Psurny of Montpelier, and Cindy (Tim) Hollander of Littleton, Colorado; eight grandchildren, Stacy (Kyle) Sapp, Shelby (Dustin) Everetts, Stefanie (Andy) Brigle, Brian Psurny, Shane (Julie) Psurny, Jenny (Dana II) Bersch, Kelly (Brian) Straub and John (Amanda) Hollander; great-grandchildren, Kaden, Kelby and Kyler Sapp, Cooper, Brady and Addison Everetts, Meghan and Carter Psurny, Haley Psurny, Ada and Cam Straub, Dana III and Josephine Bersch and Beck and Lucy Hollander; and great-great-grandson Koby Sapp; three brothers, Hillis (Glenda) Rockey of Montpelier, Clinton Rockey Jr. of Lima, Ohio, and James (Kay) Rockey of Montpelier.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Luella; two sons, Theodore and Lyle Rockey; and two brothers, Herbert Rockey and Raymond Rockey.
Visitation hours for Don will be held on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024, from 3–7 p.m. at the Thompson Funeral Home on Main Street in Montpelier. Services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Montpelier with Pastor Marc LaPointe to officiate. The interment will immediately follow at Riverside Cemtery in Montpelier with military graveside rites provided by the Montpelier Veterans. Memorial contributes may be made to the church. I used to be Don's mechanic before I took a job out of town but what a great friend and a great person he was. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family.
