Horace Lowe Obituary

Horace Neal Lowe passed away from this life on September 28, 2024, at 95 years of age.

Services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 7, 2024 in the chapel at Llano Cemetery. Graveside services will follow.

He was born in Palestine, TX to David Warren Lowe and Stella Copeland Lowe. He attended Amarllo High School before graduating from Texas Tech University.

He studied radio systems and operations in high school and received his HAM Radio Operator License (W5PVI). Immediately following, in 1948, he joined the Army and served in the Army Security Agency six years as a Morse Code Intercept Operator and later a Radio Intelligence Officer.

Neal married Helen Elizabeth Enochs on Christmas Day, 1954 and soon began his fatherhood. In 1957 they moved to Dallas, TX when Neal accepted a position working for Collins Radio in radio engineering and design. In 1961 they returned to Amarillo to stay. Here, Neal worked at Pantex as Engineering Support for several years, before becoming a teacher in the Electronics Technology Department at Amarillo College for the rest of his career.

He loved sailing, learning to sail a boat on Buffalo Lake. Neal went sailing at every opportunity, all the way from the Möhnesee in Germany to the blue Pacific off Long Beach. He also loved aviation; when his son, Eddie (a pilot) reached his flight instructor rating, Neal was proud to be Eddie’s first student and soon earned his own Private Pilot’s License.

He was rarely seen without a very fine hat, and called himself an “ole country boy”. He spent many hours volunteering for Meals on Wheels, and was always ready to lend a hand. He was a deeply loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and teacher. His intelligence, kindness and humor were apparent to all who met him.

Neal was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Elizabeth Enochs Lowe, his son, Edwin Neal Lowe, and by many other beloved family members. He is survived by his daughter Lisa Reid of Santa Fe, daughter-in-law Linda Lowe of Albuquerque, his four grandchildren Alyssa Reid of Portland, Ivy Weede of Nashville, Lauren Kollarik of Albuquerque, Annslee Lowe of Albuquerque and their families.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to either The Bridge children's advocacy program, Amarillo, or to Martha's Home shelter and support for families experiencing domestic violence, Amarillo.
