Jerene Lynn Long, daughter of Warren and Wanda (Hoffert) Long, was born October 3, 1962 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. As a young girl Jerene became known as “Jake” to her family and friends. She received her education in Emmetsburg, graduating from Emmetsburg High School.
Jake was blessed with a son, Steven and a daughter, Collette. They made their home in Spencer.
Jake was employed as a manufacturing worker in Spencer for several years until her health forced her to quit. She continued living in Spencer where she volunteered at Upper Des Moines Outreach for over 20 years.
Jake loved car races, especially dirt track racing. She attended races in Spencer, Jackson, Britt, Alta, Algona and Fairmont. A highlight was when Jake drove her brother, Kevin’s race car in a Powder Puff race and placed.
Jake loved her family and especially spending time with her grandchildren, who she often babysat. She enjoyed baking and cooking. She will be remembered by her family and friends for the delicious homemade bread rolls that she made.
Jake’s apartment was destroyed in the Spencer flood so she had been living at her son, Steven’s home. She passed away there on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at the age of 61. She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Wanda Long; a sister, Candyce Thompson; and a niece, Jill Long.

Words cannot express how sadden and shocked to learn Jake passed away. She was my neighbor when I first moved into the apartment building and we became friends. She had too big of a heart and the world is less without her in it. I will miss our conversations and friendship. She will truly be missed.
To her family, eventhough she isn't here anymore her legacy will live on through you and all the people she has touched. Just remember the good times from her.
