Joan C. Dunican, 84 of East Haven passed away peacefully at Yale New Haven Hospital on February 4, 2025. She was the beloved wife of Leonard Dunican. She was born in New Haven on June 29, 1940 to the late Edward and Genevieve Pesta.
Joan had a love for reading and books which lead her to spend 20 years as a Library Aide at Overbrook School in East Haven, where she encountered and loved all of her “kids”- the students there. She had a unique sense of humor. Joan had a green thumb and enjoyed her time taking care of her plants. She loved animals, and particularly enjoyed birdwatching. Joan was a long time member of United Methodist Church of Branford, and more recently was a member of Grace Baptist Church in East Haven. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Beside her husband Leonard, Joan was survived by her children Matthew Dunican of Wolcott, CT, Patrick Dunican of Houston, TX, and Joan Dunican of East Haven; her grandchildren, her two nieces and a nephew. She was predeceased by her sisters Lorraine Peckingham and Roberta Pesta.
There will be a graveside ceremony held on MONDAY February 10, 2025 at 1 pm at Bare Plain Cemetery RT 80 in North Branford, CT. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or St Jude Children’s Hospital.

What can we say to ease the passing of this woman so precious to you, Lenny ? And also to comfort the children you share with your lifelong partner ? May God bless the memories of your dear wife and mother, Joan, to each of you. Know that we sympathize with you and ask our Lord Jesus, that Good Shepherd of His sheep, to comfort you and guide
you through the coming days.
Sincerely, Jeff and Sharon Kayser

It’s hard to say goodbye to Joan, a truly special woman who was like a second mother to me for over 40 years. She welcomed me with open arms into her family, always ready with a smile, an adorable corny joke, and a warmth that made time with her a joy. She had a way of making me feel at home, and I’ll always be grateful for her kindness and laughter. She’ll be deeply missed and I'll always treasure the wonderful memories she gave me.
