Larry Key Obituary

Larry Key, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend died peacefully in his home on October 22, 2024 in Grand Junction, Colorado. Larry devoted his life to his family and cherished every moment spent together.

Larry was born January 21, 1944 in Fruita, Colorado to Harold and Christine Key. He was an avid athlete while attending Fruita High School, lettering in both basketball and baseball. After graduation, he married the love of his life Sharon. Together they had three children, Leslie (Brad) Ankrum, Kelli (Belinda) Key, and Larry (Dawnena) Key.

He spent his working years in the mining industry, beginning at John Brown Mountain above Gateway, Colorado for Lehr Mining. In 1965 he moved to Moab, Utah and began work with Homestake Mining. He later worked for Atlas Minerals and Rio Algom. In 1983 he returned to Fruita, Colorado where he continued his career at Gilbert/Exxon and then at Unocal (1984-1992). Larry finished out his career in Lyons, Kansas where he retired in 2008 as a supervisor at Lyons Salt.

While living in Moab, Larry was committed to coaching baseball and softball for various leagues. He had many hobbies which included golf, bowling, fishing, and hunting.

Larry and Sharon returned to Grand Junction in September of 2008 to be closer to family. While in Grand Junction, Larry dedicated his time to gardening and planting beautiful flowers to make his yard a place for anyone and everyone to enjoy. Larry and Sharon's house had a "swinging door" where company was always welcome. One of Larry's favorite things was to have a house full of family and friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Harold, Howard, Bob, Byron, and his twin Jerry; three sisters, Elva, Betty, and Jeannie. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sharon; his three children, Leslie (Brad), Kelli (Belinda), and Larry (Dawnena); his five grandchildren, Bradley (Lindsey), Brian (Anessa), Whitney (Roger), Kelty, and Kolbi; his four great-grandchildren, Nolan, Cooper, Kamryn, and Archie; his brothers, Kenneth (Cork) and Bill; his sister Mona and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Larry's life will be held at a later date.
