Philip Sims Obituary
Phillip Jay Sims, age 75, of Grandview, Ohio died on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at The James Cancer Hospital, Columbus. He was born December 23, 1948 in Bluffton, Indiana to the late Kermit & Nellie Ruth (Tennant) Sims. He married Vicki (Seitz) Sims on July 13, 1974 and she preceded him in death in 2018. Prior to her passing, Philip & Vicki spent most of their 44 years of married life in Mercer County, Ohio. He is survived by children, Matthew Moore & Nicole Sims and Bethany Allison Sims & John Murphy, all of Upper Arlington; four grandchildren, Maxwell and Alexander Sims, Sebastian and Rowan Murphy; siblings and in-laws, Daniel Sims of Bellefontaine, Jean-Claire & Friedl Bohm of Upper Arlington, and Joyce Sims of Wapakoneta. He was preceded in death by brother, Jerry Sims and sister-in-law, Melanie Sims.
Phil proudly served in the United States Marine Corp, achieving rank of Corporal and serving one tour of duty in Vietnam. He attended Wright State University as well as The Ohio State University. He retired as a Construction and Soils Inspector with Professional Service Industries, Lima, OH and Materials Testing, Venedocia, OH. Phil was an accomplished musician and drummer, having performed throughout Northwest Ohio; drumming was by far his greatest passion, in addition to his kids, grandkids and The Ohio State Buckeyes.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Coldwater. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Coldwater. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Monday, May 6 and from 9 to 10 AM on Tuesday at the Hogenkamp Funeral Home, Coldwater. Family and friends are invited to gather at shelter house #4 at Coldwater Memorial Park for food and refreshments following burial. Condolences may be made at www.hogenkampfh.com. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Disabled American Veterans Charitable Service Trust.

Phil was a genuinely great guy. My son couldn’t have asked for a better father in law and more loving grandfather to Sebastian and Rowan. He will be missed.

Phil was my best friend for over 60 years. His passing is truly the end of an era for me. He had a tremendous sense of humor and was always eager for some fun. He could be a real character at times. Music brought us together and his ability to play the drums rivaled many professional musicians. He was intelligent in his own way and I will miss the many intellectual discussion we’ve had over the years. Most notably though he was a husband of 44 years to his wife Vicki, a father, a grandfather and an unwavering and devoted friend.

He was one of the nice guys..he refused to fit into the mold. he had an infectious smile, and he made a lot of girl's hearts flutter..he loved his drums..Dave Fry, who was a lifetime friend,played piano..a great duo..rest in piece,my friend. Sincerely Donna Mihm Anderson

Phil was a bright light in Buckland. He had the winningest smile -- which he kept throughout-- the greatest baseball swing and the sharpest mathematical mind. Oh, and the drums!! No words! It was a pleasure to have shared space on this Earth with him. May the fine memories you hold wrap you with comfort and live among you forever.
