Robert "Bobby" Howard, Sr. Obituary

Robert Marshall “Bobby” Howard, 88, of Waynesboro, Virginia, passed away on March 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Bobby was born on November 4, 1936, in Waynesboro, Virginia—a proud resident of Maupin Town. He was the first son and third child of John William Howard and Christine Taylor Howard.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Kaye Brooks Howard. Together, they created a home, nurtured a family, and built a life full of memories with their children: Penny Brooks Howard, Tracey Howard Holmes (Mark Holmes), Robert Marshall Howard, Jr., Chanta Ajaya Middleton, and Myown Lee White (Tommy White). Bobby was blessed with eight grandchildren: Aisha Howard Lawson, Burke (Bria) Shingler, Tori Shingler, Michael Holmes, Makayla Holmes, Rodney White, Marshall Fields, and Ajaya Fields, along with two great-grandchildren, Oaklyn Shingler and Ada Kaye Shingler.

Bobby was one of ten children: Ruth Howard Johnson (deceased), Frances Howard Durrette, Reba Howard Stuart (deceased), Mary Howard Johnson, Roger Howard, John William Howard Jr., Leon Howard (deceased), Timothy Howard, and Donovan Howard Woodson. He was known as Uncle Bobby to many nieces and nephews and affectionately referred to half the town as “cousin.”

In his youth, Bobby attended Rosenwald School and served as a US Army recruit in Germany before embarking on a 30+ year career at Hopeman Brothers, where he studied to become a mechanical engineer and took great pride in his work. He wrapped up his work life as a team member at the P. Buckley Moss Museum. His hobbies included fishing, building bird houses and piddling in the garage.

Whether we realize it or not, we come to this world to love and be loved. Bobby Howard embraced his journey with the understanding that his mission here was fulfilled. He was a dedicated provider, a quiet supporter, a master of humor, and a loyal friend. He was committed to building community and caring for “our own,” no matter how broad that definition may be.

With hope and faith, we long for him to be reunited with his cherished parents, his siblings who left us too soon, and his lifelong friends who are undoubtedly awaiting him: Ernest Lee Howard, Jewel Blair, Nat Dorcus, Gee Gee Blair, Buddy “RD” Stewart, and more. Please hold him dearly until we meet again.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2025 at Shiloh Baptist Church. Burial will be private.

My dear Kay what sweet memories I have of Bagby Street. I remember when you and Bobby started dating, I think you were the first of the crew to get married. I remember coming to Maupin Town to you guys house. Bobby was always a joy to be around and had a smile for everybody, and you were always getting on him about something then would do that crazy laugh. He loved and cherished his family. Didn’t realize you had been together that long, oh what a blessing. Hold tight to your memories they will carry you through some of your darkest times. Remember weeping may endure for a night but JOY comes in the morning. I’m praying for you and the family.

I've been overwhelmed with sadness, but grateful in knowing that I knew him. I spent many years with his children... laughing at his stories, soaking in the advice he would share, watching his eyebrow raise when he knew he told a good joke...I so admired how he took care of Kaye/ Ma (I called her Ma too)..I so admired how the kids called him Daddy.... just knowing he would always answer and listen to them. I loved how he would say something and Kaye (ma) would smile and say, "oh Bobby".

Great memories. Great family. Great love and respect for a Great man.

Our condolences and prayers of comfort....but a smile knowing that he taught all of us so much.

May the wonderful memories of Bobby (father, husband, friend, grandfather) and his smile, help ease your suffering and loss. It's so hard to say goodbye to someone so loved. But it's really "see you later". I'm sure my daddy welcomed him with a "Hey, boy" and a smile, forever neighbors and friends til the end and beyond. My condolences to the Howard family and wishing you strength to get thru the difficult days ahead. Xoxo, Natasha Dorcus
