Steven McKone Obituary

Steven McKone of Wakefield NH died on Monday, January 6, 2025 after a sudden illness.
Steve was born in Ventura California, but he became a true New Englander after his family moved to Dover NH when he was just 6 years old. He attended grades 1 through 12 in Dover, graduating from DHS in 1975. After graduation, the lure of hitchhiking around the US was strong and off he went for some real-life adventures, including an extended stay in Houston TX installing flooring in high rise buildings to earn more money to support his traveling. Over time Steve became a jack of all trades. Once back home in NH many friends called on him to fix their stuff. And he did so with humble pride.
Steve particularly loved working on electronic equipment like amplifiers, microphones, his electric bass guitar and such. He was a member of several seacoast rock bands during the 80’s. His persona was that of a laid-back rocker who truly enjoyed jamming with his band mates. By now he had developed his signature dry humor which greatly entertained all who listened carefully to this gentle, creative, sweet human being.
Various employers over the years have appreciated Steve’s no-nonsense approach to getting things done. Most recently he was employed by a NAPA auto parts dealer near his home in Wakefield. A short commute was one of the many perks of this job. (After work he could get right down to working on the home improvement projects he enjoyed, not to mention feeding his chickens and enjoying Michelle’s home cooking over the woodstove.)
Steve was predeceased by his father, Lane S. McKone and his mother Janet M. McKone as well as by his mother-in-law, Maggie Millett, and brothers-in-law Roy Hardy and Michael Millett.
Steve is survived by his wife Michelle Millett McKone. During their 39-year marriage they were inseparable. They truly adored each other, and Steve’s passing is deeply grieved.
Steve is also survived by his sisters Louise McKone, Jessie McKone and Marie Hardy, his brother Peter McKone and Peter’s wife Betsy, and his sister-in-law Katrina Millett Price and her husband Roger.  Steve had several beloved nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews and many cousins. In addition, Steve leaves behind his dear friend of 61 years, Mark “Phil” Perkins and Phil’s wife Leslie Perkins, who served as a sponsor (Godmother) in Steve’s baptism in the Roman Catholic Church.
A spring-time Celebration of Life will be planned. In lieu of flowers, he would encourage you to engage in regular acts of kindness and to remember him when listening to music that makes you tap your foot and smile.

We used to hang around during our high school years. He was very supportive of the bands I was part off back then. He was always there to help out if needed. I remember him as a laid back very easy going guy. Never saw him get mad about anything. He had a very dry sense of humor and we all had some good laughs when we hung out. I was looking forward to seeing him at our class reunion. My condolences to his wife and family. My he RIP.

I met Steve while playing in a band with him in the Portsmouth area. He was solid and reliable as a musician, and just as much so as a human being. It was a pleasure to have known him, and I'm truly saddened by his loss.

I was both shocked and saddened when I heard of Steve’s passing. I can’t find the words to express how I feel. I’ve known Steve for many years. We did a lot of camping together and he was the bassist in our band Common Ground. We had some great times on stage and off. Steve had a great sense of humor as well. I will miss my old friend but he will never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to Michelle and his entire family. Rest in peace my brother.
