Timothy Merrill Obituary

MILTON, N.H. – Timothy (Tim) J. Merrill, age 67, of Middleton Road in Milton, died peacefully on Monday, December 16, 2019 after a brief illness.  He was surrounded by family.

Born September 3, 1952 in Rochester, he was the son of Edward Stanley Merrill and Alice Eloise (Amazeen) Merrill.   He resided in Milton most of his life and graduated from Nute High School with the Class of 1970. He was also a 1991 graduate of F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico, VA.

After spending his early working years running the blueberry harvest operations for Dr. Robert E. Lord of Farmington, he embarked on a life-long career in law enforcement.  Tim was a police officer in Wakefield, NH for over 25 years, proudly serving as Chief for 16 years.  He was most recently the Executive Officer and Acting Director of the NH State Police Standards and Training Council in Concord.

Tim was a hard-working, selfless, and charitable man who put family first and the needs of others above his own.  He enjoyed nature and was most comfortable in the forest, where he could name every tree species and identify each paw print.  An avid hunter, Tim spent every fall in the woods of Maine and NH, fields of South Dakota, or hills of Montana.  While Tim successfully harvested his fair share of game, it was not the size of the trophy that mattered to him.  Rather it was the depth of the memories made with friends and family.

Survived by the love of life and wife of 35 years, Diane M. (Manson) Merrill, his mother, Alice Merrill, his son Heath Merrill, his daughter-in-law Mary Merrill, his daughter Nicole and her husband Jim Blouch, his daughter Erika and her husband Tim Everidge, 6 grandchildren: Caleb Blouch, Cody Blouch, Michael Blouch, Isabelle Merrill, Myles Leclair, Gretchen Merrill, and 9 siblings: Lois Drew, Wayne and wife Linda Merrill, Beth Merrill, Glenn and wife Kathie Merrill, Gayle and husband Don Joy, Jean and husband Jim Brown, Richard and wife Tamara Merrill, Steven and wife Diane Merrill, Nancy Lepene and life-long friends Rodney and Donna Baker and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his father, Stanley, and his brothers Warren and David.

A celebration of Tim’s life will be held at 11 AM on Monday, December 23rd at Nute High School in Milton.  If desired, memorial donations may be made in his memory to any charitable organization of the donor’s choice.

Dear Merrill Family: So very sorry to hear of Tim's passing. I worked with Tim during my tenure as town administrator in Wakefield. He was an excellent Chief of Police. He worked hard to help develop the new Public Safety Building for the community. I regret not being able to connect with Tim when he was in Montana on a hunt a few years ago. But I am thankful he was able to hunt the "Big Sky" state as there is nothing else like it. May God continue to provide your family with peace and pleasant memories.

So sorry to hear of Tims' passing. We were very good friends in high school but unfortunately lost touch through the years. I was in the area a few years ago and stopped in at the WPD to say hello. He hadn't changed a bit ! Still the same happy, easygoing, spring in his step friend I had remembered. I will always remember Tim and wish the best for his wonderful family.

To Merrill Famliy
Sorry for your lost of Tim. I last saw him at Nute over a year ago and had a good chat with him. He was always so nice. I remember one conversation many many years ago I had with him we were laughing about knowing Leo Lessard when we saw him on the news. He said I know Leo. I told Tim I said the same thing and we laughed. Tim will be missed. The angels gained a very nice man. God bless Tim.

Tim was the very best supervisor I've ever had. I worked with him, not for him. He was intelligent and kind with a great sense of humor.
He spoke of his family so often that I felt as though I knew everyone.
May God bless Tim's family so they can have some peaceful moments during this sad time.

A Huge Thank You to all of our Law Enforcement community for today.

The overwhelming support of Blue and recognition for Wakefield NH Chief Tim Merrill was such an honor to witness. Im sure he rests easy tonight because of all of you. From the AGs Office to the Towns of Wakefield, Farmington, Milton, New Durham, Middleton, Concord and beyond.
I thank you all personally for bringing him on his last ride -through Farmington, past the Merrill Farm, where we dug potatoes and rode the horses - through the roads he traveled - many times on foot- from the camp next to my Dads - up past Diprizios Lumber and down around through his old stomping grounds of Middleton, Union and Wakefield - up to Nutes High School, to be welcomed by all of us there.
From County, Town and State Police and NH Police Standards and Training. What you all demonstrated today was absolutely more than respectful. And I am honored to have witnessed what you did, and what he meant to you all.
You went above and beyond - as you always do. And I know, and Tims huge, beautiful family knows how much you all did and just what he means to this community.
He will be surely missed.

I hope each of you keep a piece of Chief Merrill with you, on your journey through this life, and all that he stood for and tried to portray to you.
May his character, fairness and grace be forever with you all.
His time was short but his lessons everlasting!
Thank you Tim, for being part of our family.
We are forever grateful to you and your presence in our lives.
Rest In Peace Chief Merrill.

To all of my Merrill family, please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Tim was my Neighbor, friend, "brother", and I have So many memories....from early childhood right through the present. My heart is sad tonight. The world is forever changed with Tim's passing. Whether sitting on his lap as a little kid or talking lot lines as an adult. Tim's smile, humor and kind nature is forever imprinted I my mind and on my heart. He was definitely one of the good ones. For all the laughs, for all the advice, for all the help he gave to myself and my family over the years, for being who he was....I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to know this man. Tim will surely be missed by so many whose lives he touched along his quiet way. May we all find comfort in knowing Tim rests now in a better place. May our tears bring us healing and our memories make us smile.

Past Master of Unity Lodge, Brother Timothy Merrill was a true Mason and was dedicated to Freemasonry. Ive only know Tim a short time through the walls of the Lodge, but I quickly learned Brother Merrill was the go to Brother for portraying KS during the MM 2nd section. He portrayed the ritual flawlessly and always kept the sidelines engaged with his enthusiasm.
On our last Stated meeting Monday night, the Brothers of Unity Lodge shared in a private silent prayer for Tim and I believe our prayers were answered and Brother Merrill has joined with our Father above, free of all ailments, pain and suffrage. Our hearts turn to those left behind especially Diane and family as they work through their own pain and loss.
Please accept my sincerest sympathies and deepest condolences on behalf of his Brothers from Unity Lodge #62 in Union, NH.
So mote it be!

December 19, 2019

To Diane, my nephew Heath, and friends Nicky and Reka, Losing a loved one to cancer is one of the ugliest things a person can experience. It is utterly unfair the way it seems to take the best people in our lives, and always much too soon! I truly can not put into words how amazing Tim was. He was the picture of integrity, bravery, and loyalty. Absolutely selfless, such a great joke teller, and a man that I would never hesitate to ask for advice or his opinion on a matter. I can't think of another person that had more common sense than Tim did. Some of my very earliest memories are of when Tim used to put me on his shoulders or swing me around as a small child. And later, how patient he was, when we would be too loud at a sleepover, play ditch in the dark in the woods, or do something stupid like drive to the movies in a blizzard. I will always miss his unmistakable "New Englander" accent! And ahem, when I was kind of troubled teen in my younger days, he got me out of some big jams. He was always kind to my parents and they had and still have so much respect for the man that he was. He was also a true role model as one of the best fathers and grandpas we ever knew! He had so much knowledge to impart to his children and grandchildren and he had so much grace while doing so. My children loved visiting Tim and Diane, and asked to stop almost every time we drove by. :) He is so loved and will be so missed by so many. I hope it is a comfort to you all that Timthy will never be forgotten and his legacy will remain larger than life itself. From the people who may have met him by chance during an interaction with the police department, to the people like you who knew him best, his memory will live on forever in us all. His capacity of love for his family and close friends was without end. We will always be here for you! With so much love, Buster, Becca, Troy, Xavier, and Savannah
