Verna Springer Obituary

WARRENSBURG-Verna M. Springer, 90, of Library Avenue, Warrensburg, passed away Saturday morning, November 9, 2024, at home.

Born January 5, 1934, in Melvern Square, Nova Scotia, Canada, she was the daughter of Archibald J. and Edna M. (Brainard) Baker. Verna loved to say how she was delivered during a snowstorm, by a doctor traveling by horse and buggy, “I didn’t cost very much.” Verna has always been proud of her Canadian heritage, yet she did obtain her American citizenship later in life so she could support her brothers by voting. The Baker family was a tight knit family and the siblings remained close all of their lives. To say she loved her mother and siblings would be an understatement. It was a bond that no words could ever explain, to Verna her family was everything.

Verna was a hard and dedicated worker, being employed at various locations, first as a waitress and then a bartender. With her quick wit and sassy attitude she brought much laughter and camaraderie to the customers of the Lake George Steamboat Company in Lake George for many years. She also worked as a bartender for Doc Joseph’s catering service in Glens Falls, NY.

In her retirement years Verna enjoyed fishing, crabbing on the shores of Florida and Maryland, finding treasures at garage sales or thrift stores, venturing to Long Lake for camp weekends, traveling to Florida for the winter, and eventually staying year round in Warrensburg where she loved feeding the wildlife; not to mention her immense participation in the annual Warrensburg’s Largest Garage Sale, the social butterfly in Verna took off full force.

While square dancing in Stony Creek, Verna met and later married the love of her life, Herbert Springer, or “Herbie” as she fondly called him, together sharing many wonderful memories.

Besides her parents, Verna was predeceased by her daughter, Melissa (Arcuri) Deluca; son, William “Billy” Frye; her brothers Maynard D. Baker and Edwin J. Baker; also many dear friends, with notable mention of her childhood friend, Joannie (DeVries) Constantine.

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 34 years, Herbert Springer; daughter Rachelle “Ricci” (Peter) Redfield; stepdaughter Tawn (Larry) Arcuri-Whittemore; Herb’s children, Tammy (Scott) Gram, Herbert (Debbie) Springer, Robert (Toni) Springer, Korine (Michael) Dalaba; daughter-in-law Darlene (Dolly) Frye; brothers, James (Barbara) Baker, Freddie (Debra) Baker; sister Linda Baker; sisters-in-law, Herma Baker and Janice Baker; grandchildren, Harrison and Peter (P2) Redfield, Anthony (TJ) Rosa, Jacqueline Sutton, Christian and Matthew Frye, 9 great-grandchildren, 8 step-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Friends are invited to join her family for visitation on Thursday, November 14, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at her brother’s funeral home, the Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette Street, Queensbury, NY 12804.

Funeral services will follow at 12 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Nancy Barrows, of the Warrensburg Free Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will take place at Warrensburg Cemetery immediately following the funeral service.

A remembrance reception will follow burial at the Free Methodist fellowship hall, 250 River Street, Warrensburg, NY.

Donations, in loving memory of Verna, may be sent to her church, The Free Methodist Church, 250 River Street, Warrensburg, NY 12885.

Condolences and floral arrangements may be sent to the funeral home or to www.bakerfuneralhome.com.

Verna was one of my best friends. We met in later years of our lives but it seemed we’re friends our entire life. We shared so many good times in Florida crabbing and can not forget the annual picnic at camp in Long Lake. Verna was a beautiful person inside and out. Life was fun and good, when she was around. Miss you and love you. Your friend. Laura
