Patrick Aarstol Obituary

Patrick Bernard Aarstol

October 25, 1944 - January 28, 2024

Bellingham, Washington - Dr. Patrick Aarstol, a well-respected optometrist who practiced for many years in the local area, peacefully passed away on January 28, 2024 at the age of 79 from cancer and heart complications. Born on October 25, 1944 in Bellingham, Washington, Patrick was raised on the family farm near Nugents Corner by his parents Thorald and Grace Aarstol (nee Willis).

Patrick graduated from Mt. Baker High School in 1962, where he met his future wife, Patricia Ryan. After attending Western Washington University, Patrick married Patricia in the spring of 1966. After a short stint in the naval reserves training on a submarine, he shifted gears and earned a doctorate in optometry from Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon in 1970. After graduating from optometry school, Patrick dedicated over four decades to his work as an optometrist in Bellingham and founded the Fairhaven Vision Clinic where he spent the majority of his career.

In the late 80s, Patrick returned to the family farm, where he and his sons built the house in which he and his wife Patricia lived until his recent passing.

Beyond his professional endeavors, he possessed an adventurous spirit and found joy in various hobbies, including salmon fishing, golf, gourmet cooking, and gardening. As an avid fisherman, Patrick tirelessly explored waters across the Pacific Northwest, Vancouver Island, and Alaska alongside family and friends. Fueled by his passion for golf, he thrived in Lake Padden's men's club and later the Bellingham Golf & Country Club where he formed many lifelong friendships.

Patrick is survived by his wife Patricia; their three sons, with Michael residing in San Francisco, Ryan in Bellingham, and Stephan in San Diego; and grandchildren Natalie, Alexander, and Audrey who all live in Bellingham. A funeral service to celebrate Patrick's life will be held at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club on Thursday, February 8th, 2024, at 4:30pm, followed by a reception from 5-7pm. In remembrance of his enduring legacy, friends and family are invited to join in celebrating a life well lived.

Pat was a good friend. We fished the entire PNW, played many golf golf courses with many other friends, and he created many meals for many friends(Waldorf Salad his specialty). I will always remember Pat speaking about and how proud he was of Stephan, Michael, and Ryan. And how he adored Patricia!
Pat, you will be missed by many. RIP!

Dr. Aarstol was my optometrist for many years until his retirement. He was a top notch physician but I also considered him a buddy. He was kind, outgoing and always had a golf story for me during my exam. I think he's in heaven playing eighteen holes as I type this. Rest in Peace, Patrick.
