Frederick Bonyai Obituary

Frederick Bonyai
Frederick "Fritz" Bonyai, 85, of Prospect passed away at his home on Saturday, March 30, 2024. He was the loving husband and best friend of Marilyn (Zwack) Bonyai for 60 amazing years of marriage. Born June 21, 1938, at Milford hospital, Fritz was the son of the late Frank S. and Maria (Pottgiesser) Bonyai.
After graduating Notre Dame High School, Fritz went on to proudly serve his country in the Navy 4 years active duty and 2 years in the Reserves. He worked for Pratt and Whitney for five years then starting his 30-year career at United Illuminating as a meter reader moving into a lineman. While working at the UI, Fritz made many friendships with the crew who through the years laughed, supported and celebrated each other's life's occasions. After retirement he truly enjoyed meeting them on Friday mornings for breakfast. Fritz also was a member of the German Club of Meriden and the Auto Memories Model a Club.
Fritz was very handy; he was always tinkering on something, a "Mr. Fix It" who enjoyed working on any project from building dog houses and pens, porches and decks to small repair jobs around the house. He could be found many days working in his garden with his favorite German Shepherd close by or filling up the Hummingbird feeders. He never sat down unless he was eating a meal or watching the Red Sox play ball. He savored in many cultures of foods and loved to go out and eat. His wife Marilyn meant the world to him. He truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends where he always had a story to tell.
Left to cherish Fritz's love and memory beside his beloved wife Marilyn are his sister-in-law Virginia Proto and brother-in-law Michael Zwack (Ruth), many nieces and nephews and many close friends. He was predeceased by his brother Frank "Sonny" Bonyai and brother-in-law Dominic Proto and brother-in-law William Zwack (Nancy).
We would like to say a special thank you to Kelly for all of her wonderful care and friendship, we appreciate you.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Fritz on Tuesday April 9, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Church 4 Union City Rd., Prospect. Burial with Military Honors will immediately follow at Prospect Cemetery. It was a pleasure knowing Fritz at UI through the years. My favorite memory is the time Fritz bought me a beer at the old Sleigh House in Hamden as I walked in soaking wet to read the meter. I didn´t know him at that point. I told him I couldn´t have it or i could get in trouble. Once I took a sip he kiddingly said he would tell my boss. When I met Fritz again from working in the storeroom at Skiff St I told him the story. We both had a good laugh. What a great guy. May he rest in eternal peace.

Dear Marilyn and the Bonyai families, Laurel and I are devastated to hear of Fritz's passing. He always referred to you as sweet Marilyn. Fred was a kind man, a great friend and mentor, he treated everyone equally with respect and dignity. I for one will miss his whit and laughter. God bless and rest in peace.
