Cristobal Funes Obituary

Guestbook and Livestream instructions are below the obituary.

Cristobal G. Funes, Jr. of Delray Beach, FL  unexpectedly transitioned on Sunday, September 7, 2025. He is the son of Cristobal Funes Sr. & Ismenia Fuentes, husband of Antonia Funes, and father to Cristobal D. Funes III.

Born in Honduras, along with his sisters Olga and Esperanza, he would never meet his dad as he passed while his mother was pregnant. This would fuel his greatness as a father to his son. Immigrating to NYC in 1961, he lived with his sister, Olga, her husband and 6 nieces and nephews: Olga, Dinorah, Patricia, Armando, Arturo & Eddie.

A natural athlete and able to hold a note, he found his space in baseball and music. Once scouted by Hall of Fame NY Yankee Lefty Gomez, Cristobal was a lanky left handed pitcher himself. He met his future wife, Antonia Mejia, at a house party his nephew Armando was invited to, who then asked his uncle to come with. They married on March 2nd, 1969 in Astoria, Queens and moved to the Bronx, 9 blocks from Yankee Stadium. A part time singer with a trio, his love of music was transferred to his son, who became a professional DJ. From light Jazz to Rancheras to the Rat Pack crooners & Nat King Cole, his home was filled with harmonies and rhythms that would lay a foundation that would develop his son’s ears.

An avid reader, thinker and philosopher; his never ending quest for knowledge was also handed down to his son. A devout husband and protector, there was always a safe space for his family to live and love in peace. With a great cook in his equally devout wife, Cristobal’s favorite dishes were waiting at the dinner table. Lasagna, native Honduran dishes like, tamales, frijoles fritos y tortillas, sopa de res, tapado, sopa de mondongo, carne asada, chicharrones, his wife cooked it all with love and affection.

He moved the family to Jackson Heights, Queens in 1977. A hard worker, Cristobal finished his career for 25 years as a truck driver for Local 365 of the United Auto Workers at Eagle Electric in Long Island City, Queens, NY. After retirement he moved to Delray Beach where his son had lived 4 years prior, cementing the bond they had together. Not only a loving, caring, intellectual, and exemplary father and husband, his son’s friends also reaped the rewards of his wisdom and teachings. A lover of animals and nature, watching shows and YouTube was a favorite past time, also with his son. They attended baseball games, watched World Cup and their native Honduran national futbol team, went to see action or gangster movies, walks in the park and BBQs.

He will be missed, terribly, by his surviving wife and son, his family and hers, many friends and coworkers.

**********************************************

My uncle was the very best! Words can not cover how much I loved him. He was the father I wish I had. He made me laugh, cry and reflect. I will miss him so much. There's never enough time to show and tell people how much they mean to you. I'm sorry I didn't call enough but my heart will always love you Tio. You will be missed. You are irreplaceable. Rest in peace. Know I'll never forget you.

Mr. Funes, a cherished stand-in for my father during my later years, fulfilled our childhood dream of DJing. I’m certain he yearned to return the equipment because then he couldn’t get rid of us in his house. (Lol, we still held him in high regard when he returned home from work.) Those were truly unforgettable times. His words and lessons have remained with me throughout the years. We lost an incredible human being, and I was grateful for every handshake and scolding. He had a playful personality and a kind soul that we will miss for years to come. Thank you for everything, sir. I will keep the family close. May God welcome you with open arms, and I still ask you to keep an eye on my wife and me. Grateful, sir, and rest in peace.

I moved to Delray 5 years ago and the first people I got to know where Chris and Antonia. They were very kind to me, even dragging a chair to my place since I didn't have much to sit on. Over the years I had many talks with Chris-He was an interesting guy and always had words of wisdom for me. We always were trying to solve the problems of the world!! I will miss those talks and seeing his smiling face! Rest in peace

My sincerest condolences to the Funes family. Mr. Funes first opened his doors to me as a teenager when I began hanging out with his son, Cristobal the Third. He and his wife welcomed me into their home with open arms, always offering words of encouragement and practical advice on navigating life through hard work, discipline, and integrity. We shared laughs on many nights, and I always felt encouraged and invigorated after speaking with him. His baseball stories from his youth were especially riveting, and I would smile inside as I saw him relive those carefree moments before his life got serious. I often wondered what life would have been like for him and his family if he had pursued his baseball dreams, with visions of no-hitters and double-digit strikeout games dancing across the forefront of my mind. We lost touch over the years when his son moved to Florida, but I never stopped thinking about him and how his kind words helped me get through some tough times during my high school and college years. I will miss him and make sure to say a prayer for him to help his soul ascend to Paradise. May your soul Rest In Eternal Peace. Love you, Mr. Funes.

May you rest in peace tio what I remember most was when he used to sit in his chair and read his book and before we would leave to go out for the night he would always tell us to behave and be safe out there and don’t get into any trouble but in Spanish of course. That’s something that always stuck with me. God bless you tio Cristobal
