Shible Simon Obituary

Shible Simon
07/05/1953 - 02/11/2025
Shible "Sheb" Simon passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 in Houston surrounded by family.
Born and raised in El Paso, he attended Austin High School where he was a standout football and baseball player. In his junior and senior year, he was named All-District quarterback as well as earning the title of "that regular Joe Namath." He was also All-District in baseball. Considered as "the most outstanding quarterback in the area from a recruiting standpoint," he was offered and accepted a full athletic scholarship to Rice University.
At Rice, he continued to play football and baseball, eventually playing as the starting right fielder for the Owls in his junior and senior years.
Upon graduating in 1975, he remained in Houston and worked for his close friend and mentor, Fred Rizk, before going to work for Dr. Nasser Al-Rashid as Development and Management Officer for his U.S. properties. In 1991, Sheb formed his own real estate development company, Simon International Group, which he operated until the time of his death.
Over his life, Sheb was active in the Lebanese-American community through the Southern Federation of Syrian Lebanese American Clubs and Our Lady of the Cedars Maronite Catholic Church, and had many "cousins" who he helped and cared for. He was also heavily involved as a parishioner at St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church, serving communion to the homebound, helping with numerous construction projects at the church campus, and serving as a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by the love of his life, Connie Taylor, his brother, Richard Simon, and sisters, Janet Simon Mayr and Patricia Simon, as well as his children, Jerame Lathrop and Crystal Lathrop Smith, and his nieces and nephews who were like his own children including Shalimar Wallis, Brent Mayr, Richard Simon, II, Michelle O'Neill, Leah Dubois, and Michael Mayr.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road, Houston, TX 77056 with a celebration of life to follow. Arrangements are being handled by Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Shible rest in peace my brother. I got to know you not only playing against you in high school football but on a recruiting trip to Rice. You and I went together and visited. You stayed and played and I chose to play at El Paso. I remember the trip because we got left at the Houston airport for about 2 to 3 hours before we got picked up. Wish I could´ve gotten to know you more, but someday we´ll all be together! RIP

Shible´s been a very special friend of mine and my family. He was the patriarch of his family. A caring and giving man. We shared a special bond from 2 years ago that I´ll never forget. My daughter Sophie told me last night, he´s on a beautiful golf course and he´s walking it. No more carts with a handicap flag. I love the though. Hit em straight buddy.

Shible was a special friend and teammate on the RICE University football team. Was a wonderful host when teammates would gather at his home during college reunion get togethers. Shible will be sorely missed.

My sincere condolences to the family of Shible Simon. May our Good Lord hold Shible in his hands and give each of you grace and strength during this difficult time. I grew up next to McKee Stadium at Austin High and saw Shible and his teams through the late 60s to early 70s. Those white cleats still bring a smile to my face. Vaya con Dios old friend.

I can't remember many of my younger days when I didn't see Shib at our house, at school, or just hanging in the neighborhood.
He was a good friend and I am grateful I knew him. My sincere condolences to the entire family.

I was blessed to know Sheb in High School where we both played football. We reconnected at the 50th High School Reunion for the Graduating class of 1970 in El Paso, Texas. From that reconnection we stayed in contact by text and phone and would pray for each other often. I look forward to seeing Sheb again one day in Heaven. Blessings, Rev. Dr. Joseph D. Askins, Jr.

Hearing of his passing is a major shock to me. Living across the street and up the block, I was apart of the Simon family. Our childhood paths were very close through High School after he went to college at Rice and I to CU on Colorado.

Blessing to the entire family from the Hargroves.

Shible was the kindest, most generous of all people! He could make any person laugh out loud and always made everyone feel welcome in his company. He will be greatly missed - the world is a lesser place without him.

I'll always remember Shible transporting us in his limo to the 20th high school reunión. He was one heck of an athlete and friend.
