Donna Neal Obituary
Donna Jones Neal
Born: August 11, 1931 | Died: January 17, 2025
Donna Neal was born in Ashe County, North Carolina to Donald and Virgie Jones. Tragically, her father passed away before she was born, but she found strength in her mother, stepfather Clifford Marsh, sister Nell, and Grandma Jones, all of whom preceded her in death. Donna spent her childhood outdoors on the farm tending the animals, a critical skill that she would later use to support her children's menagerie of pets, including a smelly monkey, a pony, George the goose, and numerous cats and dogs. She also learned how to work the land, which she used throughout life to grow fresh vegetables and a beautiful flower garden.
Donna graduated from high school in Ashe County and attended Appalachian State University, where she played basketball. She became an avid fan of the best college basketball team in the nation, the UNC Tarheels.
Donna married Jack Rudolph Neal, and together they built a beautiful family. She is preceded in death by her husband, her son Harold "Pete" Neal, and her grandsons Christopher Neal and Benjamin Neal. She is survived by her son John Neal and daughter Jackie La Joie. Donna's legacy continues through her many grandchildren--John Neal, Jack Neal, Mark McKenzie, Jessica Hale, and Kevin Neal, as well as her thirteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Donna was the heart of her family. Her unconditional love and nurturing spirit touched the lives of all who knew her. She was the person everyone could call for help and encouragement, and she always found a way to lift up those around her and ease their worries. She also had an enduring sense of humor, which helped her manage the chaos of several generations of mischievous boys and girls. She had nerves of steel and successfully taught generations of family members how to drive on Ashe County's curvy narrow roads. She will be remembered for her warm nature, her love of card games, and the way she spoiled the little ones with treats. Her memory will forever live on in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held at Fletcher Memorial Baptist Church in Jefferson, North Carolina on February 1. Family will receive visitors from 1 to 2 p.m., and a service will be held from 2 to 3 p.m.
May she rest in peace.
