Robert E. Mathews, 67, of Delaware, Ohio, passed away after a two-year battle following sepsis. He was born in Delaware on December 3, 1957, and was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mary (Mahaffey) Mathews, and his brother-in-law, Don Johnson.
Robert is survived by his beloved spouse of 48 years, Vicky Mathews; his children, Jason Mathews (Kristi Mathews) and Heather Stake (Jason Stake); grandchildren Ava Stake, Miley Stake, Alexa Stake, Rosie Mathews, and Henry Mathews; and his siblings, JR Mathews (Nancy Mathews), Linda Mathews, and Barbara Johnson. Of all his accomplishments, Robert's proudest achievements were his family and the time he spent with them — especially going on vacations and trips together, making memories that will be cherished forever.
He dedicated 30 years to public service as Superintendent of Public Works for the City of Delaware and served 22 years as Director of Roads and Parks for Genoa Township. In 1989, he was honored by the Employee Recognition Board for the City of Delaware for his exceptional effort on the 1988 Capital Improvements Program. In 2015, the Rotary Club of Westerville awarded him the Sunrise Service Above Self Award in recognition of his commitment to the community. In 2021, he received the Hometown Hero Award from the Genoa Township Business Association in recognition of his dedicated service.
He enjoyed bowling and golf, served as a Cub Scout master, and was a past president of the Music Boosters for Delaware City Schools. He loved his family deeply — especially his grandchildren — and he loved to laugh. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, remembered for his kindness, dedication, and warm spirit.
A private family viewing and service will be held per Robert's wishes to honor his memory. Online condolences can be made at www.snyderfuneralhomes.com. Snyder Rodman Funeral Center has assisted the family with arrangements.

My first memory of Bob took place at the HuJacks Golf Course. Bob was two years younger than me and I had just made the choice of playing golf and trying to be good at the game. This would have been the summer of 1970. Bob was probably going into his Seventh Grade School Year. I remember this so vividly; A "Boy" two years younger working hard actually working on the golf course! My initial impression of Bob represented the Man he became. Bob was strong like an Oxen and worked as hard as any human was capable. Thank you Bob for your services (and the Friend you were to me)
