Kathleen Dimino Obituary

Kathleen "Kathy" Mary Dimino was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She passed away peacefully at home on November 1, 2023, surrounded by her husband and three daughters, after a courageous yearlong battle with ALS. She was 78. She was born to Bernadette and Francis Detweiler on December 12, 1944, and grew up in Woodhaven, New York, the oldest of four siblings.After Kathy graduated from Our Lady of Wisdom Academy, she studied Education at Queen's College, earning her degree. She always loved children and began her career as a second-grade teacher in Bellevue, Pennsylvania.At age 15, while attending a judo class with her girlfriends, Kathy met 17-year-old instructor Bob Dimino, who accidentally broke her collarbone after demonstrating a judo throw. That crazy event began their lifelong courtship. They started dating soon after and remained together ever since. They were married for almost 60 years and built an incredible life together. Bob's career took them from New York to Pennsylvania to Wisconsin and ultimately California. Along the way, they welcomed three daughters, Deb, Amy, and Donna, and shared many adventures. After Bob graduated from law school, Kathy helped him open up his first law partnership with a friend from school and later expanded his practice. Her mind for business and finance kept things running smoothly for 42 years until they both retired. One of Kathy's favorite places was the beach, and she and Bob owned several rental homes in the Santa Cruz area where they would often escape to, enjoying long walks along the sand.Kathy positively touched the lives of all who knew her, especially her family. She adored (and was adored by) them, known for whipping up delicious meals and treats, hosting fun birthday and holiday gatherings, and planning numerous family vacations. Whether it was a cruise, the 4th of July at the beach, or Christmas at the house, she prioritized celebrating together.An involved and doting mother and grandmother, Kathy always made those in her circle feel loved and specialand her circle stretched far and wide. She will be remembered as a kind, loving, and welcoming presence by her extended family and numerous friends.Kathy's compassion and giving nature were evident as one of the first volunteers at San Ramon Regional Medical Center, where she was recognized for serving in that capacity for more than 30 years and made many deep friendships.A creative and social person with many interests, she frequently met with her friends to knit or do yoga. Kathy also enjoyed playing games like Mexican Train dominoes and Scrabble, which she nearly always won. An avid reader, she was known by her family as an unofficial Jeopardy champ, tapping into her vast knowledge base. She possessed a delicious, dry wit and a quiet strength and had a way of making everyone feel good after spending time with her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.She is survived by her husband, Bob; their three daughters, Deb Grasham (Charlie), Amy Blaschka (Todd), and Donna Pearson (Dave); six grandchildren, Drew and Trent Kristensen, Alexis and Sofia Blaschka, and Camden and Holden Pearson; her siblings Francis "Bud" Detweiler, Donna Smith, and Linda Luberto (Nick), and 16 nieces and nephews who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest.A Celebration of Life ceremony will take place in early 2024, with details to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Kathy's name.
