Jett Sours Obituary

Jett Dustin Sours was called from this Earth on October 4, 2024, in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Jett was the son of Jerry and Judy (Herron) Sours, of Grady, New Mexico; and was born on January 30, 1989, in Clovis, New Mexico at 7:47 pm. His time of birth solved the name debate as Jerry wanted to name him Jebediah, and Judy wanted to name him Jett. The story goes that the nurse came in, overheard the debate, and giggled. She then announced his time of birth as being "7:47-just like a Boeing Jet airplane!" Judy won, and he was named Jett.

Jett was a dad to three daughters, and twin sons. He was a son, sibling of two sisters, uncle, cousin, and beloved friend. He was a cowboy, rodeo hand, farmer/rancher, and preacher.

Jett survived a rattlesnake bite at only 18 months of age. Jett was member of 4-H and FFA, and showed animals. He also won the very first Turtle Race at the Curry County Fair, winning $500! Jett enjoyed the sports of basketball and baseball as a child and teenager at Grady. Jett graduated from Grady High School in 2007, and while he did not start rodeoing until later in high school, attended NMSU as a member of the rodeo team. He earned his Associates Degree at NMSU, and later earned his Certificate of Farrier Science at Mesalands Community College in Tucumcari. Jett came back to the family farm and ranch after NMSU and began dating Monique Tapia. They began their family together, and lived in Dalhart, Texas; Clovis, New Mexico; Midland, Texas; and here at Grady. Jett's work at these locations always included horses.

Jett had a true passion for working with horses. He had a good and gentle hand with a young horse, as his brother-in-law Steve Elliott would tell people, "As far as gentling the young ones down, there's no one better than Jett."

Jett was a very charismatic man. He was someone who was able to lead others in many capacities. He was also
a very persuasive speaker. When he used these God-given gifts to serve the Lord, it was so passionate and inspiring. He knew Christ and knew that Christ was the way, the path, and the light, and he wanted to share that with others. Jett was Dedicated to Christ as an infant, confirmed and baptized at Grady United Methodist Church at age 11 in the year 2000, and re-dedicated his life to Christ circa 2012. He was a Pilgrim on the Walk to Emmaus circa 2016. He preached the gospel for a time at the First Christian Church in Tucumcari, New Mexico.

Jett was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, LaVera (Gregory) Sours; maternal grandparents, Bob and Shirley (Ames) Herron; and maternal great-grandmother, Jewell (Buttram) Ames. Jett is survived by Monique (Tapia) Sours; daughters Hope Martin (13-Canyon, TX); Jaci Vera Sours (12-Grady, NM) and Mkinsly Jai Sours (4-Grady); sons Range Josh Sours and Ryett Mark Sours (17 months-Grady); parents Jerry and Judy (Herron) Sours of Grady; sister Jaree (Steve) Elliott and their children Cody (Nicole) Elliott of Logan, NM, Karlee, Chantzee, and Kitlee Elliott of Melrose, NM; sister Kristel Sours of Grady; grandfather James Sours of Grady; his Tapia family Mark and Anna Tapia, Allie (James) Harper and their kids Gracee, Scottie and Lucia; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Jett really enjoyed card and board games with family. He loved when the family got together at the holidays and played Nertz at Aunt Karla's. Jett loved food-but he loved to prep it and mess with it more than he loved to eat it. He enjoyed music, it always spoke to his soul. Jett enjoyed camping out at the caprock. He knew the importance of family, loved his kids immensely, and he had a special love for his sister, Kristel. He would always include her, make special efforts to take her places, play marbles with her, and joke around with her. Jett brought a lot of good things to this world. His most precious accomplishment was his beautiful family with Monique. His quick smile could make anyone feel at ease. His way with words will be missed.

Funeral services will be held Saturday October 12, 2024, at 11:00 am MST at Grady Methodist Church. There will be a meal for family and friends at Allen Hall in Grady after the services and all are welcome.

While gestures of flowers are appreciated, the family greatly requests that memorials be made to the Jett Sours Scholarship Fund which will go towards his children's college education. Contributions can be sent to: Citizens Bank of Clovis, attn: Jett Sours Scholarship Fund, 421 Pile St., Clovis, NM 88101.

I met Jett as a student of Mesalands Community College. He was a very kind young man. I was always so proud to see him succeed in life with such diligence after being a student at MCC. I had further short visits with he and his family at the Odeon Theatre while Robert and I owned the property. What a shock to see his obituary and my deepest condolences go to his family and close friends. I know he will be deeply missed and pray God will keep his family close as they move through life with this great loss. May peace be with you.

jerry, judy, monique and others: how so very sad I am to hear about Jett's passing. I remember seeing him at a basketball game when he was about 1-2 years old. I said "Hi. How are you" to him and he promptly hit me on the arm. I always wondered if he might have know Loyd Murphy. Know he didn't but maybe Jerry did. That was the way Loyd greeted my son--with a hit to the arm. I had to laugh at that memory of Loyd and just smiled at Jett. May God be with all of you during this time of sorrow. Sue Ricketson
