Brett Marino Obituary

With indescribable sorrow, I share that my greatest love and personal hero, Brett Matthew Marino, born and raised in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, on January 31, 1978, has found peace after his two-year battle with cancer on Thursday, October 9, 2025. For a man who never liked to lose at anything, he finally surrendered, resting in the arms of our Lord and Savior, surrounded by our four children and me.
Brett was a proud Phillipsburg native who rarely left the zip code of the community where his roots ran deep. He built his life around faith, family, and hard work, earning the respect of all who knew him-especially his greatest achievement: our children.
Brett is survived by myself, Karyssa, his wife of ten years (who deserves a medal-my opinion, of course), and our four wonderful (and delightfully exhausting) children: Miley (12), twins Reese and Presley (9), and Luke (7), who collectively ensured there was never a quiet moment in our house, even in Brett's final days-although he wouldn't have had it any other way.
Preceded in death by his big brother Larry, aka "Uncle Gary" (who was previously married to my sister Blayre-please see family tree, not pictured), along with their children and our eldest niece and nephew, Brayden and Kaylee, whom we referred to as our kids' beloved "super cousins." Brett is survived by his mother, Darlene Mostellar, and grandmother, Rose Sciabica and an incredible, loving family: sister Jennifer and her husband Brandon with their children Matthew, Anthony, and Maci; brothers John and Erin with daughters Layla and Nora; Daniel and Helen with their crew Trey, Daniel Jr., Jax, and Jemma; and littlest brother Nicholas and his fiancée Taylor. He is also survived by his sisters Alexandrea and her fiancé Paul, as well as Chasity and Angel, and sons Nicholas and Angel Jr.
Yes-there are many siblings and even more kids to keep track of, but Brett loved them all deeply. He also adored his aunts, uncles, and cousins, several of whom held especially cherished places in his heart.
Brett will also be deeply missed by all his in-laws: Rick and Blayre Scorzetti and their children Chandler, Jasmine, and Reid, as well as Keith and Kim Keiderling and their son (my brother) Cole, as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins-near and far, all, without question, liked Brett more than they like me. It's ok, I've accepted it.
Brett was predeceased by his grandparents, Peter Marino Sr., whom he adored and spoke of often, together with the unforgettable Dorothy "Nan" Marino, as well as his stepmother, Joan Marino. In 2005, Brett lost his father and greatest role model, Larry Marino Sr. If heaven has a blackjack table, Brett, Larry, and their dad are surely gathered around it-cards and beers in hand, laughter in the air, and finally together again.
Brett proudly served the Phillipsburg Police Department for 13 years. He earned several awards along the way-not that he'd ever tell you about them. The spotlight wasn't his thing, but the job (and maybe the occasional chase) definitely was. The uniform, however, was not.
Eight years ago, while juggling a full-time job, three kids, and one on the way, Brett somehow thought it was the perfect time to start our business, Marino's Lawn Care. Through grit, charm, and a sense of humor that never failed him-and with some help (not to mention names, but she's typing this)-he turned it into a thriving business. Somehow, he still managed to keep his family fed, loved, and mostly sane, all the while making me feel like I was the most beautiful girl in the world.
When Brett wasn't working or coaching the kids' teams, he loved a good wager. Slots, fantasy football, scratch-offs-you name it. Let's just say he didn't have a gambling problem; he had a gambling passion. If there was a bet to be made, he was in-usually convinced he was due for a big win.
Brett's greatest hobbies were anything that included his family. He watched more Datelines at the end of a long day with me than he ever wished to see, while YouTube Shorts filled the background noise of our home. Our bed never had any less than 3 people sleeping in it and a dog to boot, but as long as he knew we were happy, his heart was full. As an avid talk-to-texter, he left behind a legacy of voice-to-text messages that could double as riddles. He lived for a round of golf, cooked more food than an average Italian could eat, and cheered for Notre Dame football-unless his bet said otherwise. He had a soft spot for '80s love songs and could turn any moment into a Whitney, Celine or Michael Bolton concert, much to the kids' embarrassment. Chipwiches were Brett's idea of a balanced meal-breakfast, lunch, or dinner-they never disappointed.
Brett lived life full throttle-rarely taking a seat even to eat. He was selfless, loyal, and full of heart. He loved fiercely, laughed often, and left everyone better for knowing him. Though he'd hate the attention, we'll celebrate him the only way that feels right-with stories, laughter, and love. Forever my greatest love, safest space and biggest fan.

Fresh off of field training, my literal first day on the job and LT. Baylor gets shot. I was one of the first on scene and relatively shook but wanting to be useful in every way. Brett shows up almost immediately and instantly took me under his wing. He showed me where to start questioning and looking for surveillance footage. Through all the chaos, Brett took the time to help me when I was lost. It´s a moment I will never forget for the rest of my life. I´m not even sure if I was there a full year yet before Brett called me one night and asked me to go clear his home because the babysitter was scared due to a door being open. Brett did not know, but that simple phone call and ask of me, gave me a sense of pride, trust, and brotherhood that I have always dreamt of. Throughout the next couple months I was fortunate enough to ride along with Brett and work special operations. It was during this time I realized he was the epitome of a hero. A hero to not just me, but everyone he spoke to; most importantly to his wife and children. My sincerest condolences to everyone who was lucky enough to know Brett. God bless his family and may he rest in peace.

My heart goes out to you and your family during this difficult time. I met Brett a few years ago while in my active addiction. He offered to get me help and that saved my life. I just celebrated 18months clean. I have Brett to thank for that! He was the true definition of community and compassion.

With great sadness I would like express my deepest sympathy to the Marino family and friends. I first met Brett and his brother Larry when they were little boys, they lived on Main Street with their Mother Darlene. They were sweet and kind and very polite, and you could just tell that they were going to grow up to be amazing men. Unfortunately they left this world way to young, but they left behind a beautiful legacy and I am sure wonderful families. I prey that just knowing that Brett is in so many people´s hearts and thoughts his family will find some comfort in their time of sorrow. May he Rest In Eternal peace with his Dad and Brother.

I worked for Brett for 3 years while I was in college. I saw his passion for landscaping and because of his belief in me, I started my own landscaping company two years ago. I'll always be grateful for his guidance and kindness!
