George Thompson Obituary
The date was Tuesday, Dec. 19, 1933. It was a cold day at Kings Ferry, Nassau County, Fla., with the temperature around 43 degrees, when George Edward Thompson made his debut to his parents, John H. Thompson and Ernestine Baker Thompson, who precedes him in death. He is also preceded in death by his granddaughter, LaToya Shanaye Wells.
As a child, his mother would say to him, "Be a king, George. Be a king."
George attended public schools through fifth grade. He has always enjoyed reading and studying the Word. He has continually enrolled in classes that enhanced his career in the construction industry. Down through the years, he has successfully completed a plethora of trainings and enrichment courses offered by the Church of God.
George's first source of employment, at the age 15, was with Joseph Richo and Edgar Tucker. He was later employed by James "Buster" Holzendorf. He was employed by Rayonier for a short time. For a very short time, he worked as a hand on a shrimp trawler. In 1955, at the age of 22, he initiated his own business, George E. Thompson Building Contractor, which would later become George E. Thompson Building Contractor, Inc. He was the successful owner/operation of his construction business for 63 years until his demise. He performed many remodels, new construction and commercial construction. He was the owner of two commercial shrimp trawlers. Prior to his demise, he was noted as one of the longest serving contractors in the state of Florida.
George served as a member of the city of Fernandina Beach Board of Adjustments, the Housing Authority of the city of Fernandina Beach, the Planning Board of the city of Fernandina Beach, the Ad Hoc Investigation Committee on Building and the Amelia Island Housing Finance Corporation. He also served on the Board of Directors for Impact Your World Church until his death.
George was always drawn to the Elm Street Church of God, partly because of Bro. Joseph Richo, who influenced him to help with the construction of the present building and contribution of items needed by the congregation, however, it wasn't until, while sick, that he received a visit from Mother Queenie Brown, who prayed for his successful healing. He later saw a need for salvation and surrendered his life over to Christ, never to look back. He has served as an Ordained Deacon/Pastor's Councilmen, chairperson of Board of Pastor's Council, President of Choir #2, President of YPE/Family Training Hour, Board of Christian Education, Sunday school teacher for over 25 years, Men's Fellowship, Advisor to Christian Service Brigade, liaison to Pastoral Care Ministry and Nursing Home Outreach Ministry. He enjoyed traveling to various church functions, locally, district, state and Church of God General Assemblies. He served Elm Street Church of God ministry, faithfully, for 60 plus years. He was a "giver" and a master encourager. Whenever someone would say, "I can't," his reply would be, "Why not?" His motto was, "You take care of God's house just like it was your house."
George enjoyed watching western and old black-and-white movies and playing games on the computer. He enjoyed visiting the country (Kings Ferry). On March 15, 1958, George and Mary "Lizabeth" Richo were united in Holy Matrimony. He married his soulmate, and they would do life together for 65 years, five months, three days, until his demise. The Lord blessed this union with loving children, whom he would instruct in the ways of the Lord and life.
