Martha Foley Obituary

Martha Jane (Hazel) Foley, 87, of Osterville, MA and formerly of Fitchburg, MA, passed away peacefully at home on October 3, 2023 surrounded by loved ones.

Martha was born on December 11,1935 in Clinton, MA to John and Helen (McCue) Hazel. She grew up in Clinton, MA with her brothers Peter, David and Michael. Martha attended Fitchburg State College, where she met her adoring husband the late Bernard J Foley. Martha is predeceased by her daughter Martha (Marcy) Palus and survived by her children Jamie Foley and his wife Lisa, of Ashburnham, MA, Ann Carroll of Yarmouth, MA, Tom Foley and his wife Jennifer of Osterville, MA. Martha also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren, John Palus, Erin Moriarty, Matthew and Allyson Foley, Shannon Livingston, Molly Carroll, Sarah, Lauren and Tommy Foley as well several great grandchildren.

Martha worked as a teacher in the Fitchburg Public School system, where she made lifelong friends amongst her colleagues. She later earned her masters degree in guidance and was very proud of this role and her ability to help students. Martha cared deeply for their wellbeing and often spoke fondly of them even in her later years.

Martha and Bernie retired to Osterville in 1997. They became active members of Our Lady of the Assumption, where they established wonderful friendships. Martha enjoyed her time with the Lady's Guild, St. Vincent de Paul, and morning mass. She enjoyed walks with friends to the water and back to the village, where she would meet up with Bernie at the coffee shop. Martha found friendship and great fun with her bridge ladies and continued to play into her mid 80's. She was an avid reader and was very thankful for the Osterville Public Library. Martha's greatest joy was watching her grandchildren grow, never missing a chance to celebrate birthdays, holidays, religious milestones and sporting events.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Martha at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 76 Wianno Avenue, Osterville on Tuesday, October 17 at 11:00 am. A private burial will be held at a later date.
