Martha Crookshank Obituary

Martha Crookshank, a beloved artist, educator, mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away on October 13, 2025, at her daughter’s home in Warsaw, Indiana, following a brief battle with cancer. Born on November 1, 1949, in Alliance, Ohio, Martha dedicated her life to nurturing creativity and inspiring countless students throughout her 28-year career teaching art in Alliance City Schools. Even after years have passed, she maintained connections with many of her pupils, reminding us all of the indelible impact she made on their lives.

Martha earned her Bachelor’s degree from Mount Union College and her Master’s Degree from Mary Grove College, both in education. Her brilliance extended beyond her academic achievements; she was a vibrant spirit known for her incredible artistic talent, warmth, and a sense of humor that left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She even had a large presence in Warsaw, Indiana these last 20 years. Neighbors and passers-by would often stop to admire the beauty of her home, especially her enchanting window boxes that changed with the seasons — a reflection of her deep love for nature and gardening.

Martha's artistic skills found expression not only through her profession but also through her personal projects. She took joy in landscaping, painting, drawing, creating stained glass, and pottery. She relished in getting her hands dirty, often wielding a shovel or hedge trimmer with the same passion she applied to her art. Many residents of Alliance may even hold a piece of her artwork, cherished in their homes, ever a reminder of her extraordinary gift and spirited personality.

Martha's proudest accomplishments included being crowned Homecoming Queen and serving as Captain of the Cheerleading Team during her high school years. Additionally, she designed what remains the flag of the Carnation City (Alliance, Ohio) and painted a mural in the local police station, using models from the community, showcasing her love for her hometown and its people.

As a grandmother, Martha went above and beyond, immersing herself in the lives of her grandchildren, Jacob and Jillian Rackley. She was an involved and fun grandmother, often dressing in costumes and crafting props and toys, making her presence a cherished part of their upbringing.

She is survived by her loving husband, James "Jim" Crookshank; her devoted daughter, Anne (Crookshank) Rackley; her dear grandchildren, Jacob and Jillian; and her cherished sisters, Rebecca "Becky" (Dale) Dillon, Constance "Connie" (Tom) Chakford, and Lynn (Phil) Francis, along with many nieces and nephews who adored her.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, C. Ted Ermlich and Elizabeth "Betty" (Geltz) Ermlich; her brother, Gerald "Jerry" (Jane) Ermlich; and her sister, Anne (Ronald) Grimes.

Martha Crookshank leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and creativity. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
