Karen Lyford
Chelsea, VT - Karen Lyford, 82, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and dear friend to so many, passed away peacefully in her
Chelsea, Vermont home on October 20th, 2025 – the same warm, welcoming home she shared with her devoted husband, Doug Lyford, for more than 55 wonderful years.
While she hailed from the South and was known to have a bit of southern flair, Karen lived most of her life in Chelsea. As a proud New Englander, she was the heart of her family and the heartbeat of her community. Married to the love of her life, Doug, in March of 1970, she devoted her life to raising their four daughters: Brooks Ann Chapin (Huntersville, NC), Stacey Lyon (married to Jim,
Chelsea, VT), Shelley Lyford (Encinitas, CA), and Ashley Lincoln (married to Sam, Randolph Center, VT). She filled their lives with love, laughter, gratitude, and unwavering support for their many endeavors. She taught by quiet example: to work hard, to be respectful, to love our country, to care deeply, to be unafraid, and to find joy in everyday moments. Her pride and joy extended to her cherished grandchildren – Tailor Chapin, Tucker Shaw (married to Jeremiah), Matthew Lincoln, Tyler Chapin, John Lincoln, along with great grandson Isaiah Shaw – each of whom brought her immeasurable happiness and pride.
Karen was a beloved presence in the town of Chelsea, where she served for many years as both the Chelsea School secretary and the Chelsea Health Center office manager. In those roles, she became a second mother to countless young people, always ready with a kind word, a listening ear, and a helping hand. She offered warm meals, clean clothes, and a safe haven to those who needed one, quietly shaping lives with compassion and care. Her kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on generations of students, families, and neighbors.
She found joy in life's simple, beautiful rhythms: the changing of seasons, tending to her flowers, watching wildlife from her back porch, and sharing tea and a home-cooked meal with loved ones and friends. She treasured exploring America's historic places with Doug, cherished Lyford family game nights, and loved "wine with the girls." Fiercely patriotic and community-minded, she had a deep sense of duty, pride, and gratitude for her country and community.
Karen was an avid sports fan with a spirited love for Duke basketball and PGA golf. She was known to rearrange her days so as not to miss a game or tournament. She never turned down the chance to enjoy a good burger or a fresh manicure, and she especially loved shopping trips and adventures with her daughters. Friends near and far – including her daughters' many lifelong friends – adored her as a second mother, a confidante, and a steady source of support and warmth. Karen delighted in opening her home – and kitchen – to all.
Her boundless energy carried her up and down the Eastern Seaboard and beyond, faithfully supporting her daughters and grandchildren at sporting events and horse shows for over six decades. She gave freely of her time and her heart, embodying love, loyalty, humor, and grace every single day.
Karen will be profoundly missed by Doug, her daughters, her grandchildren, and the many friends, neighbors, and former Chelsea students whose lives she so lovingly touched.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Chelsea First Branch Ambulance. Per Karen's wishes, there will be no public service; instead, she will be celebrated privately by her immediate family.
Her legacy of love, laughter, sportsmanship, patriotism, and kindness will live forever in the hearts of all who knew her. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is now joyfully reunited with her parents, William and Doris Brimble, brother and sister, Billy Brimble and Joan Ross, and father and mother-in-law, George and Thelma Lyford, along with her beloved Morgan mare, Mandy, and Cocker Spaniels, Molly and Maggie.
She leaves behind not only a lifetime of cherished memories, but the gentle imprint of a wife and mother's love: steady, selfless, and everlasting. A love that will continue to guide and comfort all who were lucky enough to be held within its devoted embrace.
