Keyvan Karbasioun Obituary

Keyvan Karbasioun

Northampton, MA - Keyvan Karbasioun, deeply loved by all who knew him, passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 2, 2024, in Northampton surrounded by his loved ones after a long and courageous battle with an illness.

Born on December 10, 1950, in Abadan, Iran, Keyvan spent his early years in Tehran, where he excelled academically. He graduated with honors from Alborz High School, earning a prestigious scholar prize from the education minister. His thirst for knowledge led him to the University of Kansas and University of Massachusetts - Amherst, where he earned multiple degrees: a bachelor's in Romance Languages, another in Chemical Engineering, a master's in political science, and a Doctorate in Education. His true passion, however, was teaching, and he spent more than two decades as an Associate Professor of Languages at Fitchburg State University, inspiring countless students along the way.

Keyvan's gift for languages was extraordinary. Alongside his native Persian and fluent English, he mastered Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, Swedish, and in recent years, began learning German and Turkish. He made it a point to connect with people in their native tongues at every opportunity, a reflection of his deep respect for culture and human connection. He was not only a scholar of languages but also a selfless bridge for his family. He guided and supported his siblings and relatives through the challenging immigration process and played an essential role in helping them build new lives in a new country. His impact will be felt for generations.

Despite his own hardships, including a two-year illness that confined him to bed, Keyvan remained selfless, always thinking of others. His visitors were greeted with warmth and always left with the most sincere and heartfelt, "be careful driving," a simple but powerful reminder of his caring spirit.

Keyvan's siblings will forever cherish his strength and support, particularly during their father's passing, when he, as the eldest son, provided immense comfort and stability while quietly grappling with his own grief.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mostafa and Batoul (Homayon) Karbasioun. He is survived by his siblings, Zohreh, Kamran, Mehran, and Matin, their families, and a loving extended family of aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family extends their deep gratitude to the staff at Care One at Northampton, Baystate Hospital, and New England Hospice for their compassionate care during Keyvan's final years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Society, The Parkinson's Foundation, or a charity of your choice, in honor of Keyvan's legacy of love and learning.

A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, October 27, 2024, at 1 PM. It will take place on the 11th floor of Marriott located at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Campus Center building. DROZDAL FUNERAL HOME OF NORTHAMPTON HAS BEEN ENTRUSTED WITH HIS SERVICES.

There are no words for the beautiful man and intellectual force Keyvan was. I was privileged to recognize Keyvan's incredible academic gifts as a member of his hiring committee at Fitchburg State University in 2000. He became a life long friend and one of the most profound inspirational persons I have ever known. He is the man who raises everybody by the way he lived his life. His kindness and generosity are legend. But it was the way he cared about others and the humility which which he never showed his privileged early life nor the many intellectual accomplishments which inspire me. I have taught this entire week for Keyvan. I have joy in my heart because he would have wanted all of us to have joy. Keyvan and I loved to speak different languages with each other. I learned Italian from him and recently was in his Portguese class. He and I travelled with students to Mexico, Italy and Spain. He was protean genius in so many ways but above all he represented love. He loved others. There is so much love for him in my heart and for those he leaves behind. You touched my heart and soul profoundly, Keyvan, and I will always have you in my heart. I loved you dearly!

I am sorry for the loss of Keyvan. He was my intensive Spanish teacher at Hampshire College in the early 90´s. I remember how amazed I was with his ability to speak so many different languages. His class was one of my most memorable.
My heartfelt condolences to Keyvan´s family and friends.

Keyvan was one of the first colleagues I met when I started at Fitchburg State. In my second semester, we taught in neighboring classrooms. I absolutely loved hearing his beautiful, booming, energetic voice through the divider between our rooms. He was such a joy to be around, and it was an honor to serve on the faculty with him. My sincerest condolences and prayers to all who love him.

I am so very sorry to hear of Keyvan´s passing. I will always remember his love of the Italian language, culture, and people. Our adult ed classes in Italian were some of my favorites. Kevan was so gifted and enthusiastic to share his love of all things Italian. My father thought the world of him and enjoyed speaking with him in Italian when we attended the CIC functions at Fitchburg State. Rest in peace, Keyvan. I will always think of you fondly.

I´m very sorry to hear about Keyvan´s passing. We met in Amherst in 1987 at a Brazilian party. We always conversed in Portuguese and I was impressed by Keyvan´s proficiency in multiple languages. At the time he was a high school teacher in Holyoke, where most of his students were Spanish-speaking. Keyvan always demonstrated great empathy and compassion for those less privileged, and was eager to engage with people from other cultures. He will be missed by those he came in touch with. My condolences to his family and loved ones.

Keyvan was my student at UMass, my friend and my boss when he headed up a program of English for foreign visitors through the International Programs Office at UMass. After I retired from UMass in 2002, I asked Keyvan if he could use me in the program and he hired me for one of the best teaching posts I've ever had. He has always been kind and understanding and had a wonderful sense of humor. I enjoyed our friendship and sorry we've been out of touch for the last few years. I had no idea Keyvan was bed-ridden for the past two years and his the notice of his passing was so incredibly sad.

Keyvan was the kindest man. I loved being his nurse I loved seeing his smile every morning. No matter how sick he felt Keyvan would always ask how my children and myself were doing. His kind words and often encouraging me to further my education I will miss our conversations and hold him and his sister in my heart forever . May you rest in peace my friend and may your family and loved ones find comfort and support during this time and be surrounded by love and light .
