Lindsay Nolting Obituary

Lindsay Crumpler Nolting

March 12, 1921 - December 25, 2024

Lindsay Crumpler Nolting, known to her family and girlhood friends as Bittie, died on Christmas morning, 2024, at the age of 103. Born in 1921 in Danville, Virginia, to Lawrence O. Crumpler, M.D., and May Talbott Crumpler, she attended Sweet Briar College and married Frederick E. ("Fritz") Nolting, Jr., of Richmond in 1940. Bittie raised four daughters while acting as de facto aide-de-camp to her husband, a career minister in the foreign service.

She is predeceased by her husband, Fritz (1989), her daughter Frances Nolting Temple (1995), her daughter Jane Nolting Meniktos (2023), and her sister, May Talbott Crumpler Carter Bergman (2018). She is survived by daughter Molly Nolting Bruner and son-in-law Ben Bruner of Ravenel, S.C., daughter Grace Lindsay Nolting of Columbia, VA, grandchildren Luke Bruner, Lisa Bruner, Annabrooke Temple, Jessie Temple, Mary Tyler Temple, Joelle Nolting, and Laura Meniktos, and great-grandchildren Rowan Bruner, Iris Bruner, Ruby June Lane-Bruner, Maze Jensen, Charles Reno Tiballi, Frances Porter, Graham Porter, Louisa Porter, and Ada Alexander.

In a 1951 letter to his in-laws, Fritz described Bittie as "not only the sweetest and prettiest girl in the world, but also the finest, brainiest, and most capable. Bittie runs this six-ring circus with the skill of a P.T. Barnum and the deftness of a Tallyrand." Loved by her daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many friends, Bittie maintained these superlative standards to the end of her life.

Remembrances of Bittie are welcome and can be left online at Hill and Wood or at the desk at Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge (250 Pantops Mtn. Road, Charlottesville, VA 22911). The family thanks the staff at Westminster Canterbury for their care.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 19th, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul's, Ivy Episcopal Church (851 Owensville Road, Charlottesville), with a gathering to follow in the parish house. Donations to the Charlottesville Symphony are welcome in lieu of flowers.

Lindsay was so kind to me when I rented her cottage for 3 years from 1991-1994 at Windie Knowe. I am so glad she lived a long and wonderful life.
