I just learned of Yuki's death this afternoon when I was visiting Oahu from the Big Island. As I was walking around Kailua, I happened to see her name on her office door. I decided to pop in and say hello, only to learn of her passing.
We were friends at school in Rome, both of us having arrived mid-year at the start of 1969. She was fresh from the beaches, and I was fresh from school and running a popular boutique in Chicago. As we became friends, I would accompany her to all the best boutiques in Rome, acting as her fashion advisor. One long weekend we hitchhiked up to Florence together (an adventure in itself!), and visited some of its wonderful museums.
Sixteen years later, I came to Hawaii for the first time and discovered that my sister Margaret and Palikapu Dedman (the founders of Pele Defense Fund) had hired Yuklin to take their land-use case to the Hawaii Supreme Court where she won their gathering-rights case.
I was also then privileged to meet and spend a Mele Kalikimaka campout at South Point with Yuki's cousins Emmet Alui, the Trask sisters, and many other Hawaiian activists.
Yuki was fierce, and a good friend in our early days.
Peace to her family and friends!

Yuki was the first friend I made at Maryknoll when I moved to Hawaii. We had so many adventures together in life and she was such an inspiration and so kind. We remained friends until she went heaven and she will be sorely missed by so many.
Yuklin spent a life well traveled, well lived, well spent and well loved. She leaves such a rich and beautiful legacy for her family and friends.

I am saddened to hear of Yuklin´s passing. In 1983 Yuklin gave me the opportunity to work in her law office when she was at the Tradewinds Hotel off of Ala Moana Blvd. Yuklin introduced me to the sport of Triathlons at that time. She was a fierce competitor and I am forever grateful that I had that time with her, as an adult athlete and learning from her during the time I worked in her law office. My condolences to the Aluli family.
