Sally Davis Cain, 71, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025 after a courageous battle with Stage 4 lung cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family as Father David Wooton, Orthodox Priest of St. Anthony the Great Church in San Antonio, said her final prayers.
Sally was born on April 17, 1954, in Del Rio, Texas, where she spent her childhood. As a young girl, she eagerly explored the rugged landscapes of West Texas with her father, a dedicated veterinarian, making calls to remote ranches and cultivating a lifelong love of adventure, resilience, and community.
She graduated with high honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Education, and earned a master’s degree in Reading Education from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1979. Sally dedicated her life to education, teaching at Lufkin High School, Dunbar Junior High, St. Cyprian’s Episcopal School, and for 18 years as a professor at Angelina College. Her passion for teaching earned her a nomination for the Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Program Award.
A committed community leader, Sally served as president of the Lufkin Junior League, was an advocate for children through Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) in Angelina County, and implemented “Project Celebration” at Lufkin High School. She also contributed her time and leadership as a board member of the Boys & Girls Club of Deep East Texas, Young Life, the Museum of East Texas, St. Cyprian’s School Board, and the Texas-Exes Association. Her most cherished achievement was founding the Adoption Center of East Texas (ACET), which helped bring joy to over 300 families through adoption.
Sally’s legacy lives on through her beloved daughter, Abigail Elizabeth Cain, her son-in-law, Richard Kenneth Test, and her precious granddaughters, Susannah Rebecca Test and Madeline Isabelle Test. She is also survived by her mother, Patricia Kallminzer Davis; sister, Mary Davis Cobb and her husband, Tim Cobb; sister, Nancy Davis Brougham; nephews, Brian and Christopher Cobb; sister-in-law, Marjorie Holladay, and her husband, Bob Holladay.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Robert Thomas Cain Jr.; her father, Emery Davis; and her parents-in-law, Robert T. Cain Sr. and Marie Perkins Cain.
Services will be held on September 23, 2025 at 9 a.m. at St. Anthony the Great Orthodox Church in San Antonio, Texas, with Father David Wooten officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ Monastery, St. Xenia Cemetery, with a reception in Kemp, Texas.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Sally’s care team Dr. Sherri Cervantez and the whole team at the UT Mays Cancer Center and to Laqui Rousseau who cared for her with skill and tenderness.

We were so sorry to hear about your Mom’s passing. Ryan and I have so many fond memories (and pictures) of our family get togethers. We so loved your Christmas gatherings and lots of swimming in your pool. We always loved you getting to spend the night with us and joining us for Old Bethlehem. We are so proud of your accomplishments and know your parents were so proud to watch you grow into a caring and accomplished woman. Your mom and dad will be missed. Much love, Ellen and Ryan Sorrell
