Joan Shufran Obituary

Joan Shufran

Jan 5, 1936 - Sep 9, 2024

Joan F. (nee Kellar) Shufran, age 88, passed away on September 3, 2024, in Hobart, Indiana. Her husband and children were holding her hands at the time of her last breath. She was born in Gary, Indiana on January 5, 1936, and grew up in Glen Park. Joan was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School and the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse before devoting her life to her husband and children. In 1952 Joan met her future husband, Frank, at a wedding reception when they were 16 and 20 years old, respectively. They quickly fell in love, were married in 1956, and spent the next 68 years in steadfast devotion and commitment. Joan had always been a skilled seamstress and during the Nation's Bicentennial year, she made her first quilt. Quilting was soon her passion. Largely self-taught, she became a highly respected and award-winning quilter in Northwest Indiana. She was active in local guilds where she eagerly welcomed new members and fondly taught them the art. She was known for her wit, devilish humor, and strength of character. Most notably, Joan lived a life of giving and loving. She touched and influenced people in the most profound ways. She was a lifelong member of St. Bridget Catholic Church. Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Stephanie Kellar, and brother, Phillip Kellar. She is survived by her husband, Frank Shufran, daughter, Kimberly A. Shufran, son, Kevin A. Shufran PhD (Andrine Shufran PhD), and granddaughter, Erica Muller Atkins (Ian Atkins). A celebration of life is planned and will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joan's memory to iCan House at https://icanhouse.kindful.com/?campaign=1126895, or www.icanhouse.org Burns Funeral Home & Crematory entrusted with arrangements. www.BurnsFuneral.com

Joan was a good friend of my mother-in-law, Ruby Duffala. All three of us were members of Heritage Quilt Guild, and Joan was active for almost two scores of years! She will be missed, but we know that her faith was in our Lord, Jesus Christ, and that she is now with Him. God's blessings to Frank and all her family members.
