Timothy Devanney Obituary

Timothy J. Devanney
1952 - 2026
Timothy J. Devanney, 73, of Manchester, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of the late John and Catherine Devanney.
Tim was predeceased by his parents, John and Catherine Devanney; his in-laws, Mona and Thomas Wilke; his brother, Peter Devanney; his nephew, Anthony Petrone; and his son-in-law, Michael Dyer.
A proud, lifelong resident of Manchester, Timmy was deeply devoted to his family and his community. He is survived by the love of his life and literal "girl next door," Mary Wilke Devanney, with whom he would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this May and his mother, Irene Devanney. He was an adoring father to Mandy Devanney Murphy and her husband Craig Murphy of Lynn, MA; Molly Devanney; Christine Devanney Sheehan and her fiancé Matthew Barry; John Devanney and his wife Amy; Tim Devanney and his wife Brittany; and Cathleen Dyer, all of Manchester.
Timmy was the proud grandfather of ten grandchildren: Maggie, Allie, Tommy, and Ronnie Sheehan; Abigail, Melanie, Kayla, and Lillian Devanney; and Mattingly and Luke Devanney. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Devanney Miner; Jane Devanney Burgess; his twin brother, Tommy Devanney and his wife Kelly; and Anne Devanney. Tim is also lovingly remembered by his in-laws and best friends: PJ and Michele Wilke Petrone; Doug and Maureen Wilke Ogrean, and Tommy and Rakel Wilke, and many other extended cousins and family.
Tim's life was dedicated to his family-both at home and at Highland Park Market. Whether you were an employee or a customer, you were family to Tim, and he loved you all. He adored his nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews, earning him the affectionate nickname "Banky." Once he became a grandfather, however, "Papa" was the title he cherished most.
Tim's dedication to the food industry and the community had him serve on too many boards to count both nationally and locally earning him a number of honors, including Connecticut Food Association Person of the Year and Hall of Fame Inductee, the Food Marketing Institute's Glen P. Woodward Public Affairs Award, the Spirit of America Award, and recognition from the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Manchester Rotary. He also proudly served as Grand Marshal of the Greater Hartford St. Patrick's Day Parade. Of all his accolades, Tim was most proud to receive the National Father of the Year Award in 2011.
"Nobody Does It Better" was a slogan at the store, but it was also how those who knew him viewed his life. Nobody did anything better than Tim Devanney.
Memorial donations may be made to Highland Park Families Foundation, 317 Highland Street, Manchester, CT 06040.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 2nd, 2026, from 3-7 p.m. at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W. Center Street in Manchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 3rd, at 10:00 a.m. at St. James Church, 896 Main Street in Manchester. Burial will follow at St. James Cemetery. To the extended Devanney family, sincerest condolences from the Villandry family just a few doors down. Tim was always a great neighbor and a true pillar of the community. I first met him when we moved to this area in 1998, my son was 8 months old. Tim said "when he turns 16 we'll put him to work in my store!", and then he did just that. He then followed up by hiring in my other 2 sons, who worked there all thru high school and college. Tim did so much for so many people, some was public but much was not. We lost a good neighbor but Heaven gained an angel. I bet he's up there right now giving Mona a hard time.

To the Entire Devanney Family, I met Timmy, when he hired me at 16 years old, my first job, at Highland. He taught me the foundation for all my work habits at a young age also learning the right way to bag groceries, not like the kids do today in other grocery stores. He gave me the ability to move around in the store and learn other areas. Timmy was an amazing person. He is someone I will never forget. I am so sorry for your loss, he will be truly missed. To the Devanney & Miner families,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Tim´s illness last summer. I met Tim when we were in high school when he worked for my dad at Bolton Veterinary Hospital. We clicked immediately and had many laughs. I always enjoyed running into him in the store. A legend has been lost and will be greatly missed. My condolences.

My heart goes out to the entire Devanney family. Timmy was an amazing man; the kind of man that anyone would be blessed to cross paths with in their lifetime. Knowing Timmy has had a lasting impact on me, right up to this day. Timmy taught me so many things I did not know I needed to learn during my time at Highland Park Market. He will be missed by an entire community! I know Timmy's legacy will live on through his incredible children. R.I.P.

When I moved to Manchester I was informed to go to Highland Market and how glad I did! Family owned and the best! Tim would be within everyone to say hello and welcome you! Also was a volunteer at Lutz Museum where Tim was President.
A special guy and family! So sorry for your loss, he is missed!!!
