George Lode Obituary

Dr. George Lode passed away at his home in Petaluma, California on September 1, 2024. George was born on June 2, 1941 in Riga, Latvia to his mother, Velta (Zaravics) Lode, and father, Arnolds Lode. George and his family moved to Parchment in 1949, where they were sponsored by the Parchment United Methodist Church. He graduated from University High School in Kalamazoo in 1960, where he was on the track team and excelled in the 880. He enjoyed running until the last years of his life.
George married his wife, Karen (Bachman) Lode, on August 3, 1962. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1964 and received his M.D. from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1968. Following medical school, George was an intern at Borgess Medical Center from 1968 to 1969 and a surgical resident at Bronson Medical Center from 1969 to 1970. He was then in private practice as a physician in Parchment from 1970 to 1990.
George and Karen moved to Redding, California in 1990, where he was in private practice as a physician until 2007. Following his retirement from private practice, George was a staff physician at Shasta Community Health Center in the City of Shasta Lake, California from 2007 to 2023, after which he and Karen moved to Petaluma to be closer to their children.
George is survived by Karen, his wife of 62 years; his son and now daughter-in-law, Eric and Cynthia (Wilcox) Lode of San Francisco, California; his daughter and future son-in-law, Melissa Lode and Sean Melchionda, of Mill Valley, California; and his brother and sister-in-law, Eglis and Karen Lode, of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
George was an avid wine enthusiast, hiker, runner, nature lover, and traveler. He will be remembered by all as a warm, loving, and kind man who touched so many lives. George will be loved by his family for the rest of our time.

I will be forever grateful for George and everything he did for me and most likely so many people like me. George saved my life and I know he was someone that put everyone else's health and issues before his own. I could call him any day or night and he was always eager to help. I can't imagine a kinder or more selfless person, and I will forever miss him. "We understand death only after it has placed it's hands on someone we love"

George was a high school classmate of mine at University High School. He was a quiet, achieving young man who was a great track athlete also. Saw him at a class reunion once and talked to him on the phone. He impacted many lives with his medical practice. You're remembered and missed!

I am saddened to learn of George's passing. I first became acquainted with George in the 7th grade in Parchment when he was in the 9th grade. We were both on the Student Council, he being president. I grew to know him better through the Scouts in which both he and Eglis were active. I also knew their parents as I delivered the Kalamazoo Gazette to them from 1958-62. I knew Karen from PHS as we were in the same Latin classes. George later acquired the Parchment Medical Clinic facilities and my parents were his patients until he left for California. I had moved from Parchment post-college and could not avail myself of his services. I always thought very highly of the Lode family and considered George a remarkable person of great intellect and likeability. I've often wondered how his life continued to unfold. Rest in Peace, George. Richard Granger PHS62

Dr. Lode was a classmate of my husband in Parchment, our Dr. for the years he practiced in Parchment. He was a gentle, soft spoken man; a gentle giant in our eyes. It was hard to see him move to California. He is and will be remembered as an excellent, caring man/doctor.

My family lost a wonderful man on September 1st. George was my brother in-law for 62 years. He was a kind, patient, and compassionate man. I will miss talking to him about football and asking medical questions any time of the day or night. I will always be eternally grateful for him saving my son's life. He will be greatly missed by all of the family.

Condolences to the Lode Family. My Mom worked with Dr. Lode at Parchment Family practice for many years, and spoke very fondly of him over the years!

Dr. Lode diagnosed my serious illness (aseptic meningitis) in 1975. I was so sick and he admitted me into the hospital for treatment and care. Having him as a family physician, may well have saved my life. I´m guessing he is now assisting the Great Physician in heaven. Russ Tiller Jr.

Karen, Eric, and Melissa,
Sending condolences in the loss of George. A Kalamazoo friend sent us his obituary. We have been wondering where you are. We moved to New Smyrna Beach, FL in 2006.
George and Jim were in practice for 2 years before we moved back near home in Sioux Falls, SD. I´m remembering being neighbors down the street as well as Melissa and Jamie playing together.
Jamie and husband live in Rochester, MN, where Mike is pediatric GI physician at Mayo. They have a 15 year old daughter.
Angie is in Rapid City, SD and Kelly here in FL.
Time goes so quickly. Would love to hear from you.
