David Allington Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 19, 2023.
David C. Allington, age 69, passed away on November 4, 2023 after a heroic battle with heart failure. He is predeceased by his parents Walter Allington and Anna (Boyd) Graham; his in-laws, James and Margaret Callas; and his brother in laws, Peter Callas and Tom Rennie. He is survived by his wife, Penelope Callas Allington, who was his devoted caretaker, fierce advocate and his constant companion until his last breath. They were high school sweethearts and married on July 10, 1976.

He loved his children Andrea (Mark) Badurak and Jerid (Kelly) Allington unconditionally, leaving behind a legacy of love, courage, and passion. His guidance, support and sharing of inappropriate stories with Steve and Jeff Scofield helped fill the void left by their father and Dave's best friend, Steve's untimely passing.

Dave, the oldest of four, was born on June 15, 1954. He was the embodiment of a true pioneer, always setting an example for those who came after him. His relentless determination and unwavering spirit were evident from the very beginning. Not only was Dave the first in his family to go to college, graduating from Elmira College in 1976, he attended NY State Police Academy finishing 1st in his class. This was a milestone that represented not only his personal achievements, but also his commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and a fulfillment of his dreams to serve the community he lived in.

As a fireman of 33 years, Dave served the City of Elmira with unwavering dedication. He selflessly put himself in harm's way to protect others, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the gratitude of the community he served. He truly loved being a fireman retiring as a Captain.

Dave grew up with a deep appreciation for the outdoors. He found solace in his love for fishing and hunting. They were not merely pastimes for him; they were a connection to nature, a source of peace, and an opportunity to share those cherished moments with loved ones.

Throughout his life, Dave continued to embrace the spirit of being a trailblazer. His determined spirit extended even to his medical journey, where he volunteered to be a part of the Heart Mate III trial, leading to the FDA approval of the device as an option for long term destination therapy. He also was one of the first to undergo a laparoscopic LVAD exchange at Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital. His courage in facing his medical challenges head-on demonstrated the same determination that defined his entire life.

While Dave was a man of few words, his ability to deliver one-liners was legendary. Many of us experienced the surprise and delight of his humor when we least expected it. His quick wit and well-timed quips brought laughter into our lives, a reminder that joy can be found in the simplest of moments. Though his words were few, his impact was profound.

The roles he valued most was that of husband, father, and father figure. He was a source of strength and a guiding light by all that knew him and his love will continue to shine in the hearts of his family, friends and colleagues. We are grateful for the time we had with him, and we find peace in knowing that his memory will live on, just like the echoes of his quiet laughter.

Dave is survived by his brothers Doug (Brenda) Allington, Dale (Mary Ellen) Allington, and his sister Denise Nagle; his cherished nieces and nephews, Derrik, Tracie, Aaron, Travis, Carolyn, Carly, Jacob, Colleen, Ian, and Nicholas. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Catharine (Patrick) Callas Filliben and Georgia Rennie; along with his granddaughters Ava and Kaitlin, who made him look at the world in a new light.

Dave understood that family is not confined to a specific set of circumstances. He knew that the heart recognizes kindred spirits and embraced them as family, regardless of lineage. His ability to nurture these relationships created a legacy of love that extended far beyond the boundaries of tradition.

The family wants to thank all of his caregivers and neighbors for their contributions and help throughout the last 7 years. They would also like to thank the 4th floor and LVAD team at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Please join us for a celebration of life, December 2, 2023 from 1-3 at the Elks Club at 300 E Gray Street, Elmira. Dave loved all things sports and was a man of comfort, please wear your favorite team's apparel to honor his memory.

In remembrance, we ask you to make donations to the Swarthout's "Take Your Child Fishing Derby, donate blood, or have your heart screened every year. If donating to the Derby, check or cash can be delivered to Swarthout's Bait and Tackle Shop in Elmira or to Penelope Allington.

This is an absolutely beautiful remembrance. It expresses and embodies perfectly all that was Dave. Although we've been friends for years it's in these last few that I really got to know him.
In our time together I learned much about his love of outdoors; his adventure stories were stuff of legend. His love of family was deep and sincere. I enjoyed our "movie time" together very much and his critique and sense of humor. "We" solved all the world problems but kept it secret..
You had to be there... LOL
With love and condolences to the all the clan and especially my dear Penny.

I am terribly sorry for the loss of your brother, brother-in-law and uncle, especially at this time of year which should be carefree. I never met David but through all of you I know he is a man worth hoisting up a glass in honor of which I hope we all will....
