David Hunter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 11, 2024.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Lyle Hunter, a cherished and devoted friend and respected colleague. David touched the lives of many with his integrity, drive, and intelligence. A dedicated real estate investor, he excelled in his careers, leaving a lasting impact . David developed properties in northern Virginia such as Fair Lakes, Fairfax Town Center, and Oakton. He was especially proud of Little Rocky Run and Compton Village.

David joined the Army when he was 17- his father had to sign for him, since he was underage. He proudly served in Germany with the 11th Airborne and later became company clerk with the 24th Infantry Division.

After the Army, David went back to his home state of Pennsylvania, first working at the Evenflo baby-bottle factory, then in his step-father's Titusville office supply company. Looking for more, at 23 years-old, he left Pennsylvania, with $600 in his wallet, and drove his Chevy Impala to Washington D.C. He was then hired at Ginn's Office Supply Company in the government contracting department. Later, he moved into their sales division and sold tractor-trailer loads of office supplies. David always strived for more, and his next step was to earn his commercial real estate license where he also excelled. He used this momentum and knowledge to start his own development business, Hunter Properties, Inc.

David went on to further his career with real estate investment properties such as child care centers, pharmacy properties, and FedEx distribution centers. In addition, he assembled properties at Lake Anna, where he lived; The Estates at Terry's Run, Estates at Corsair Terrace, Goodwin Cove, and Pointe Seanna.

Not only was David a successful businessman, he was also a philanthropist donating to the National Air and Space Museum, the Flint Hill School, the National Museum of the United States Army, and many more.

David loved the Washington Redskins, Deep Sea Fishing, Running 5K's, 10'k's and 1/2 marathons, and cars ! He had a great affection for animals, especially his dogs. David also loved the sport of waterskiing. As an avid competitive water skier himself, David gave back to the sport, forming World Waterski Pros with Andy Mapple to launch professional water ski tournaments at places such as Downtown Disney, Daytona, and New York City.

David lived in both Florida and Virginia since 2003 where he continued to touch the lives of many. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. David is survived by his partner: Michele Munsch, his two sons: John Hunter and Paul Hunter, and his sister;Leora Host. A private memorial service will be held to celebrate David's life. May he rest in peace, his spirit forever alive in the memories and hearts of those who loved him.

I met David some years back at a Lake Anna business group function and was a fan ever since. Some years his junior, I listened with rapt attention when we shared a table - his stories, advice and manner were things I admired. I will miss those opportunities and wanted to let his friends and family know how respected and admired he was here at Lake Anna. May God keep you David and our deepest condolences to the Hunter family.

Dave was a larger-than-life character-hilarious, completely unpredictable, and always wide open! As a neighbor, Dave was always fun to chat with, and was genuinely concerned with the well-being of his community. Within water skiing, Dave allowed his passion to lead him to involvement in so many different capacities, including running the professional tour. Time with Dave was always time well spent-he´ll be dearly missed.

My husband and I were lucky to meet Mr David. He left us the gift of a lifetime - a magnificent property with a lake view which once belonged to Mr Hunter. This house brings us love and joy every day and we keep this noble man in our memory and hearts. We feel lucky we spent some time on this earth knowing such a great person with a heart of gold!!!!

Sincerely,

Thank you Dave for all of the memories. I will always remember the fun times we had together especially adventures at the lake, going to the Lobster Fest, meeting President Bush, cruising in the Viper, attending the Super Bowl, spending Christmas in Orlando, and just hanging out and laughing over dinner. Dave was a great man with integrity, intelligence and extremely driven to do well. He always looked out for us. I am blessed to have known him.
