Georgina Gilmartin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 25, 2024.
Georgina Bridget Gilmartin (Fitzgibbon) age 87, of Old Bridge Township, NJ, formerly of Hazlet, NJ, passed away on May 22nd, 2024 after battling a long illness. She passed away at home surrounded by her family.

Georgie was raised in Park Slope, Brooklyn, growing up in Holy Name Parish. She soon moved to New Jersey where she raised her family.

She worked as a secretary at Temple Shalom as well as Asarco, both in Matawan, NJ, before ultimately landing at Samuel Klein & Company in Newark, where she worked until she retired at the age of 73. In her free time, Georgie volunteered at the St. Benedict Food Pantry in Holmdel, NJ. She was an avid reader and an adventurous traveler. Those who knew Georgie will remember her deep love for her friends and family and her ability to bring laughter to almost any situation. Selfless and caring throughout her life, Georgie's final act of kindness was choosing to give herself over for medical research at Robert Wood Johnson.

Georgie was reunited in heaven with her parents Mary Fitzgibbon (née McDonough), and Timothy Fitzgibbon, and brothers Thomas and Timothy (Teddy). She is survived by her beloved sister, Sr. Catherine Fitzgibbon of the Sisters of St. Joseph, her five children, Matthew Gilmartin (Elizabeth), Theresa Nicholl (Richard), Eileen Gilmartin- Boechler (Nick), Suzanne Hersey (Miles) and Michelle Crandall (Bill), her eighteen grandchildren and her eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss her dearly.

A Funeral Mass will be held for Georgina on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, 10:30 AM, at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church in Holmdel, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Benedict Church, 165 Bethany Road, Holmdel, NJ, 07733.

I am so glad I met Georgie through her sister, Sr. Catherine. It was always so fun to go out to lunch with them both and my mom, who has known Sr. Catherine for decades. Georgie would have us in tears we were laughing so hard! Her light will be missed. Much love to all the family.

I worked with Georgie at Samuel Klein and Co for many many years. She was funny, dedicated, super smart and kind. She shared in all of my life events- marriage/divorce, children and grandchildren, passing the CPA exam. She was a welcome face or voice on the phone each morning! I have missed over past few years but will always remember her. Take your rest Georgie and say hi to Marv for me :)

I would like to express my condolences to Matt, Theresa, Susan, Eileen, Michele and all her wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren. I have very fond memories of your mom, Ms. "G". Spending time at 9 Cresci Blvd was like a sanctuary where Matt and I could hang out. She was a great woman. I´m glad that I had the opportunity to catch up with her a bit at Bridgit´s wedding. She will be missed by all.
