Rima Bostick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 9, 2024.
Rima Bostick, 92, of Kinderhook, New York passed away on December 9, 2024 in her home of nearly sixty years surrounded by family, caregivers, friends, her cats and the artwork she loved after a long and fulfilling life.

Rima was born December 23, 1931, in Queens, NY to Samuel and Beatrice Barufkin. She graduated from Hunter College High School, completed a bachelor's degree in Psychology at Queen's College, and a master's degree in Public Administration from NYU. She attended Brooklyn Law School for one year.

Largely concerned with the wellbeing of others and while still in school, Rima began her career teaching at day care centers in NYC. She then held a caseworker position with the Montgomery County (NY) Welfare Department. Naturally, she continued her work to champion the education of children in her work at the state level, working in several branches of the state government including the NYS Education Department and the NYS Mental Hygiene Department. With a keen eye for financial issues, she broadened her impact with her work in the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance, as well as the NYS Temporary Commission on State Local Fiscal Relations. Her interest in Public Health and experience in the New York State Legislature carried her further into her position as Staff Director of a NYS Regents Task Force on Medical School Enrollment and Physician Manpower. Rima capped her work with New York State government as a senior budget analyst for the Assembly Ways and Means Committee. For the ten years that she held that position, Rima responsibly monitored legislative matters and the fiscal implications for NY human services and provided advice to elected members and others in areas that commanded in excess of one third of the total state budget. Her administrative work, policy development, management and research for the nearly 30 years within the New York State government has immense impact to this day.

Afterwards, Rima worked as a financial planner associated with American Express Financial Advisors from her home in Kinderhook. During that time, she was featured in several national local publications and made presentations on TV and to community groups.

Her contributions to her local community ranged from engagement in the Old Chatham Hunt Club (President, Treasurer), North Pointe Cultural Arts Center (President), Hudson River Classics (founding Director), Albany County Opportunities (President), Albany Urban League (Treasurer), Columbia County Council on the Arts (President), Kinderhook Memorial Library (Member of the Board), East Greenbush Central School District (elected board member), and many others. In 2016 (at age 84), she ran for Mayor of Kinderhook Village.

In addition to her parents, Rima was predeceased by her daughter Nan in 1970, and her son Samuel in 1979. She is survived by her daughter, Laura (Jamie) Hankin of Kinderhook and her granddaughter, Sarah Hankin of Forest Hill, Maryland. She is also survived by nephews and a niece and their children.

A special thank you to the community of people who cared for Rima in the past years as she required more care, as well as the short visits and words of support in the past two weeks. Particular thanks go to Marian Guerriero, Erika Johnson, Rosemary Marino and Tom Nicholson, Dale Payson and Scott Vining for the quiet, calm presence they brought to her last days. Lesya Kostereva, Rima's beloved and devoted caregiver, is owed a debt that cannot be repaid for the kindness and patience she showed Rima daily. The family also extends deep appreciation and thanks to Community Hospice for their assistance, professionalism and support.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be directed to the Columbia-Greene Community College Foundation, 4400 Route 23, Hudson NY 12534, a community resource Rima staunchly supported.

No services will be held at this time. A celebration of life will be held at her home in the late Spring, Rima's favorite time of year.

An incredible conversationalist, and she could fill up a room with that laugh. I will miss her...

To my dear friend Laura, just have to say we all should be blessed with a child/children like you. I am sorry that I have not seen you all in a while. There are so many wonderful memories it´s difficult to select one. I will just say I have never met anyone as strong and determined as
Rima no matter the circumstances. I will miss her after more than
50 years of friendship. I hope I will be able to attend the celebration of such a
life well spent. I have photos I will share later. M. Sweeney

Rima will be very much missed by our family. We were neighbors on Hudson Street from 1966 till 1974 when we moved to a farmhouse outside Kinderhook. We loved visiting her in her lovely home, and we partied with her many times. Then after we left NY State and lived across the country, we were always welcome to stay with her when we returned to Kinderhook to visit. My son Richard and daughter Sara also loved to visit her, after they had my grandchildren we all could come and stay with Rima the the grandkids loved the pool. We have wonderful memories of Rima and send our condolences to Laura and her family. Karen Creange Lambie

My husband and I met Rima shortly after we bought a house on Hudson Street in 2015. It quickly became a custom to walk down to Rima´s house 2-3 times a month for potluck "Happy Hour´ and conversation. There we would exchange stories, trade trivia and just generally have a good time.
Rima´s Thanksgiving gatherings were a thing to behold. Everyone was welcome, and those who might otherwise be dining alone would find themselves part of a `family´ celebration. I think there were regularly over 20 people at these gatherings, each bearing an offering for a varied and memorable feast. My sons drove up from Hartford to attend these celebrations and remember Rima well; her commanding presence, her quick bark of a laugh and her gracious welcome into her home.
We are grateful that Rima introduced us to the Old Chatham Hunt Club. The OCHC has provided us with many new friends and opportunities and helped make Columbia County feel like home. We helped Rima host several Hunt Teas at her house. These were lively events with a bounty of food and beverage and 40-plus people
Rima was a woman who was quick to aid those in need, offer space in her home to travelers, and advice and friendship to those who sought it. She will be missed.

Rima was an extraordinarily brave person who came into my life when she reached out her hand and offered me a safe place to live when the war broke out in Ukraine. She welcomed me into her home and left her mark forever. She gave me a place to live and trusted me. It was an honor to be part of her life.

I love you, Rima! Thank you for everything!
Rest in peace.

For some reason, I keep hearing the lyrics from To Sir, With Love--

But how do you thank someone
'Who has taken you from crayons to perfume?
It isn't easy, but I'll try

If you wanted the sky
I would write across the sky in letters
That would soar a thousand feet high
"To sir, with love"

How can I ever thank this remarkable human being for all her generosity, support, refuge, and life changing advice. Impossible.

Godspeed. We will miss you here on earth but you will forever be in the hearts of so many.

Growing up in a small town, we all knew each other. We had the privilege to know Rima. My parents, Sylvia and Bob were friends. My mom Sylvia, was good friends and is heart broken over the loss. Our hearts go out to Laura and her daughter. The rest of us that knew her, can remember encounters with a great person who over came huge obstacles and continued on with her life, helping others on their path through life. Thank you Rima for being a friend to Sylvia.

I don´t know exactly what to say, I worked for Rima for almost 20 years. I can say that it was an experience. I met a lot of interesting people. I worked for a lot of interesting people that were friends of Rima. I´ve learned an awful lot working for Rima. I am very happy that I was able to be there at the end to let her know that she was not just a boss. She was a friend and she was family and I am glad that I was able to help Laura and Lesya and take some of the pressure off of them as it was not an easy thing to standby and watch somebody you care about pass away. I thank you, Laura for letting me be part of that, as my family always thought of you and Rima as family. I remember all the birthday parties and all the Hunt club parties,Christmas parties ,New Year´s parties. and of course, Thanksgiving, the house was always filled with people. that will not end the house will always be filled with the memories.

My first memory of Rima was as a teenager who was close friends with her son Sam. Sam passed away in 1979 which was devastating to all of us . I lost contact over the years and moved away . I came back to Kinderhook years later as an adult and reached out to Rima . From that point forward I would joke you´re now
My mother in the north being I live in Fl. I would come visit every couple of years and stay with Rima. We would have libations together and laugh in front of the fire. I will miss her dearly and wish Laura and the rest of the family peace and solace in the fact that she is now with others she loved and love her. Well Rima thanks for the wonderful times and love you extended to me .

When I moved to Albany, I knew no one. That would soon change when my boss at the time introduced me to Rima. Not only was she my first friend there. but she made sure that I met a number of interesting people. I also felt that I became part of her family and was fortunate and honored to meet her mother, Laura, and later Jamie and Sara. Her home was always a warm and welcoming space, which Rima was only too happy to share, and I spent a lot of time taking advantage of her generosity, often spending overnight visits (and often longer). I will miss the sense of humor and irony and the laughter we shared. RIP my dear, dear friend, I trust we will meet again. The love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

We always enjoyed our visits with Rima. Commandeering from her well-outfitted bed (computers, phones, screens, etc), she was always in control and filled with stories. Her punctuated laugh will never be forgotten. She was a force of nature.

Rima left me in wheezing laughter, bent over and gasping for air more times than I can recall with her robust humor. So grateful she came out west for a visit back in 2011-ish to say final farewells to her own childhood friend as that would merge our worlds from that point forth.
Very much appreciate the textured richness, wisdom, salty-sweetness, shooting-from-the-hip clarity, truth, tenderness and joy she brought into my life and my family... She became family to so many of us lucky adoptees.
Thank you Rima for countless hours of song, story, adventure, cultural virtual Sherpa tours, art, advice and premium grade A comedy.
My son just sang "Great Green Gobs" in honor of the dear lady who taught it to him...
So know that you're kind of a big deal to many of us, "OKAY"?!
