Sherry Alley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 15, 2024.
Sherry Pruitt Alley passed peacefully to her heavenly home on March 8, 2024 with family and friends at her side. She was born to Frank and Florence Pruitt in Spartanburg, South Carolina on November 2, 1943, the first of three daughters (sisters Mary and Peggy). She was married to Manson R. Alley, her childhood love, for almost 60 years.

Manson and Sherry grew up in the same church, and that connection kept them together while attending different schools and colleges. Sherry graduated from Mars Hill College with a business degree, and went to work after their marriage in 1964 to support the couple, while Manson finished college.

The ever-supportive wife, she moved the family to seven different cities in three states as Manson's career in banking grew. During this time, the family also grew by having daughter, Sharon, in 1969 and son, Richard, in 1973. Sherry is survived by her children, Sharon and Richard (wife Jessica), four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Sherry's spirit of giving led her to volunteer for many organizations where she could make a difference in the lives of others. Her love for Christ was the driving force behind her work. A member of Deermeadows Baptist Church for thirty-seven years, she served in many roles from teaching to domestic and international missions. She served as a volunteer for over twenty years in the Emergency Room at Baptist hospital. She painted school rooms for Seamark Ranch, her favorite home for children.

While ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease), ravaged her body over the past eight years she took part in seven drug trials, one of which required hospitalization because it had never been tested on humans. Sherry knew that these trials might not help her, but her spirit was committed to trying to help others in the future.

In lieu of flowers, we request that donations be made to the Permanent Endowment Fund of Deermeadows Baptist Church. 9780 Baymeadows Road, Jacksonville Fl. 32256 or to The ALS Association, Florida Chapter, Attn: Sherry's Striders, 3242 Parkside Circle Center, Tampa, Fl 33619.

The memorial service will be held on March 21, 2024 at 11:00. Visitation preceding the service at Deermeadows Baptist Church.

What a dear and wonderful lady she was. Always happy and positive and would always be busy. She could pressure wash her house and lay a paver walkway at her church! A real dynamo and truly great person.

Sherry was one of the ALS community with my husband and me. I was so happy to share my husband's wheelchair with Sherry after my husband's death. I so enjoyed my visits with Sherry and Manson. There was always joy in their home despite the diagnosis of ALS. I'm so glad I had them to share the journey. Thank you to Sherry for her willingness to join clinical trials that may one day find a cure and treatments for ALS. I will never forget Sherry's beauty of spirit as she faced this sad disease.
