Thomas Sabol Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 19, 2024.
Thomas G. Sabol, 78, of N. Catasauqua, passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 19, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Charlene (Karoly) Sabol, with whom he would have celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary this coming October. Tom and Charlene were faithful members of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Catasauqua. Born in Coaldale, Tom was the son of the late Joseph and Bertha (Hegedash) Sabol. Upon graduating Coaldale High School in 1963, Tom joined the United States Navy Submarine Service where he proudly served aboard the USS Sabalo 302 and the USS John Marshall SSBN 611. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Tom flew to Pontiac Michigan and drove his 1967 Pontiac home to Coaldale.

Tom worked as an Electrician for the former Bethlehem Steel for 4 years, and then as a Lineman and later a Sub Station Repairman for PP&L for 38 years before his retirement. He worked at the Catasauqua Credit Union for 30 years and for the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association where he served as the Coaldale Branch Secretary.

After retirement Tom dedicated countless hours to his church and their school hall where he would do their electrical work. He was an avid family man and loved gathering with family and friends where he would enjoy a cold beer or a glass of merlot. He loved to travel, especially to Walt Disney World with his family where they have made many beautiful memories together.

Surviving with his wife Charlene are their children Peter and his fiancé Amy Arden, and Stephanie and her wife Jen. Tom had five grandchildren: George Thomas, Charlie Francis, Ryan (Kelsie), Grace and Luke. Additionally, he is survived by his sister Barbara. Tom was preceded in death by his siblings Dolly, Bernard and Joseph.

A Mass of Christian Burial and his last Military Honors will be celebrated on Tuesday June 25, 2024, in his church, 122 Union St. Catasauqua, Pa 18032 at 10:30am. There is no calling period. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Tom's memory to the Lehigh Valley Submarine Veterans Memorial, care of the O'Donnell Funeral Home, 1064 5th St. N. Catasauqua, PA 18032.

Dear Charlene, family and friends of Tom,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Tom´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS John Marshall SSBN-611 and USS Sabalo SS-302.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
Charlene and family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).

We enjoyed having a beer with Mr. Sabol in Pittsburgh. Lots of love and prayers to the Sabol family!

He taught me the value of family, of money, of time management, in that order.

He believed in me all my life, through every up and down. The few times we butted heads are more than outweighed by the times we shared a conversation, a laugh, a beer, or a simple moment of silence.

He was a kind, industrious and generous man. Occasionally stubborn, but always goodwilled, he had a silly side to boot! He was my Dad. His name was Thomas Sabol.

Years from now, when people moving into a house in the Valley come across - inexplicably - 10 wall outlets in their master bedroom, they'll say, "Ah, that's T. Sabol's handy work. Thanks, Tom!"
