Bette Hamilton Obituary

Bette S. Hamilton, beloved wife of the late Perrin C Hamilton, died on November 8, 2023 at the age of 101 years old at her home in Haverford with her family at her side.

Born Bette Jane Shadle in Lock Haven, PA on March 10, 1922, Bette was predeceased by her parents, Helen and D. Kelly Shadle and her siblings, Robert Shadle and Lenore S. Caldwell.

After graduating from Lock Haven High School Bette went on to graduate from Bethany College.

For many years, Bette performed and taught dancing. As a young adult, she was hired to develop choreography for plays on Broadway
In 1947, Bette married Perrin C. Hamilton of Philadelphia. Perrin and Bette raised their three children in Lower Merion, Pennsylvania.
Along with raising a family, Bette was very supportive of her husband's political career and volunteered for countless Philadelphia area charitable and non-profit organizations. Bette was supportive of her husband at the Union League of Philadelphia. Bette was among the first members of the Ladies Committee at its founding in 1966. She served as its third Chairwoman in 1971, and stayed actively engaged until recently. Bette's husband, Perrin C. Hamilton, served at the League's 52nd President, 1982-83.

Fishing, sailing, and skiing were among her favorite activities throughout her life. For many years, Bette and her family would spend their summers in Ocean City N.J.

Among the club memberships that she enjoyed, Bette was a member of the Ocean City Yacht Club, Merion Cricket Club, Gibson Island Club, Acorn Club, and the Sedgley Club where she served as President.

She is survived by her three children; Deborah A. Hamilton, Perrin C. Hamilton Jr. (Betsy), and Maribeth H. Moore (Tom). Additionally, Bette is survived by 8 grandchildren: Sarah Hamilton Heller (Stephen), Stephen C Brengle (Janine), Victoria H. McCarthy (James), Alexander P. Brengle, Perrin C. Hamilton III (Chauncey), Justin T. Moore (Alex), Kelley Moore Buki (Chris), and Paxton H. Moore, (M. Tinsley Ullrich).
Bette is also survived by 10 great grandchildren: James, Tess, Grace, and Anne Heller; Elizabeth, James, and Caroline McCarthy; and Keresey, Perrin, and Georgiana Hamilton.

The funeral service will be on Saturday, January 6th , at 1pm, All Saints Church, Wynnewood.
