John F. Morariu Sr.

John Francis Morariu Sr., 99, lifelong Portland resident who had the honor of being the oldest veteran in town, passed away peacefully surrounded by his four devoted sons on Sept. 25.
He was born on Aug. 13, 1925 on Airline Ave. to Joseph Morariu and Mary (Talvan). He attended town schools and was an active member of St. Mary's parish, culminating in serving as Grand Knight of his K of C council. He participated and excelled in several sports during his life. A trait, unfortunately, he failed to pass on to his future children. At 17, with his parent's permission, he joined the Navy and proudly served in both the Atlantic & Pacific theaters during WWII aboard the USS Donnell (DE-56), and USS Chipola (AO-63), surviving two torpedo attacks. After returning to civilian life he courted and then married Sylvia (Natale) in 1949. They made their home in Portland and raised five children. He was employed by the Red Wing Oil Co., and for over 30 years, at the US Post Office in town. John also maintained a rental property, and due to his generous nature, many of his tenants were able to save up for a home of their own. He also loved tending to his incredible garden. Later in life could be seen surveying his property in his golf cart.
John was predeceased by his loving wife Sylvia, his daughter Frances and her husband Gary Yeaw, his daughter-in-law Joanne (Hill), his brother Joseph and his sister Helen Catalano. He leaves behind his sons John Jr., Thomas, Matthew, his son Mark and his wife Wendy, five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
