Richard Howe Obituary

DELAND - Richard Howe, 92, affectionately known as "Bud," passed away peacefully Sept. 5, 2024, at his home. A visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, with a service to follow at 2 p.m., at Lankford Funeral Home in DeLand. He will be laid to rest at Glenwood Cemetery following the service.
Born Aug. 1, 1932, in Buffalo, New York, to Howard and Jetty Howe, Richard earned his beloved nickname from his mother, who called him "her little buddy." Over time, "buddy" evolved into "Bud," and the name stuck throughout his life.
Richard grew up in Bayview, New York, where he attended Woodlawn High School. After graduating, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy with his best friend, Kenny Gokey.
During his four years of service, Richard was stationed on the USS Talladega, a Haskell-class attack transport, and the USS Balduck, a Crosley-class high-speed transport. He was awarded several medals, including the Medal for Good Conduct, a Service Medal for China and Korea, and one for National Defense.
After leaving the Navy, in 1960, Richard moved to Miami to join his younger brother, Ron, and his family. It was there he met and married his beloved wife, Shirley, on Nov. 14, 1965, in Hollywood, Florida. Together, they shared 59 years of marriage.
In 1974, Richard and Ron relocated to DeLand, where the brothers co-owned and operated Super Discount Supply, a popular hardware store in the area. Richard retired in 2000 after many successful years in business.
Richard was a talented woodworker, crafting beautiful pieces of furniture and clocks he lovingly gave to friends as gifts, leaving behind a legacy of skill and generosity.
He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; his son, Chris (Amy) Howe; grandchildren Lauren Howe, Scott Howe, Ashley Murphy and Forrest (Elizabeth) Murphy; and great-granddaughter, Stella Murphy. He is also survived by his stepsiblings, Ray, Randy and Linda Howe. Richard was preceded in death by his grandson, Gage Howe, and his brother, Ron Howe.
Richard will be fondly remembered for his service to his country, his craftsmanship, and his devotion to his family and friends. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
