Alan Hughes, 81, of Dartmouth died September 13, 2025 at St. Anne's Hospital after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

He was the beloved husband of Nancy (Cunha) Hughes, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage.

Born and raised in New Bedford, the son of the late William and Sarah (Wareing) Hughes, he lived in New Bedford for most of his life before moving to Dartmouth six years ago.

He graduated from Holy Family High School where he played basketball and made lifelong friends. He then graduated from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and worked as a pharmacist, pharmacy manager and pharmacy supervisor until his retirement. In early years he also taught science and coached basketball at Roosevelt Junior High School and Bishop Connolly High School.

Alan is survived by his wife Nancy; his son, Michael and wife Jennifer (Bergeron) Hughes of Dartmouth and their five children: Jackson, Ryan, Christopher, Jillian and Grace.

He was predeceased by his son Brian of Ashburn, Virginia.

He leaves his daughter-in-law, Victoria (Clark) Hughes and their three children Katherine, Adam and Peter, all of Ashburn, Virginia; his sister-in-law, Pauline Graviel of Fairhaven; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his brother, William F Hughes and his wife Jean, his brother, Francis and his wife Marion, his sister, Dorothy Baldwin and her husband James, and his brother-in-law, John Graviel.

He and Nancy truly enjoyed spending time with their children, grandchildren and extended family.

He was an avid golfer with many friends and family and enjoyed following the Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots.

He will be most well remembered for his wit and sense of humor.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 20th at 10 AM in St. Julie Billiart Church, 494 Slocum Rd., Dartmouth. The public is invited to meet directly at church. Burial will follow in South Dartmouth Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday, September 19th from 5-8 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6), Mattapoisett. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of America www.alz.org or the Hope Health Hospice,1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904 https://www.hopehealthco.org/ways-to-give/donatenow/.
