Gene Johnson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by O.H. Pye, III Funeral Home - Detroit on Nov. 12, 2025.
Gene Allen Johnson Sr. was born on January 6, 1947, in Paraloma, Arkansas to the union of Dotson and Lummie Johson- both of whom preceded him in death. Gene was one of nine children, four of which passed on before him. He is now reunited with them and his loving wife, Carolyn Naydean Johnson. Gene was educated in the Howard County school system in Arkansas, graduating from Lockesburg High School in 1964.

Gene immediately joined the Army, and was honorably discharged in 1966. He then moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he became employed by Chrysler Corporation. Gene was known for his strong work ethic, being recognized on many occasions for his perfect attendance throughout the 31 years he was employed at the plant. He only missed work for funerals or his yearly vacations to Arkansas to attend annual homecoming festivities, with his extended family and friends.

In January 1969, Gene was united in holy matrimony to Carolyn Clark. Together, they shared over 56 years of love, laughter and family. They raised six wonderful children in a home grounded in faith and love. Known for his bright smile and infectious laugh, Gene was an avid sports fan, he loved to watch westerns, he loved old school r and b; live blues music and Motown classics. Visitors to the Johnson home always enjoyed a loving environment filled with good laughs, good music and great food.

Gene accepted Jesus as his Savior and was baptized at Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Charles E. Marshall,Sr., He was a faithful and proud member of the Usher Board until his health would not allow him to serve.

He leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his homegoing: his children, Pastor Anthony Clark (Twinice), Stephen Clark, who preceded him in death (Patricia), Deacon Gregory Clark (Felecia), Lisa Marshall (Pastor Charles), Gene Johnson Jr, and Chaundra Randle (John Sr.); eleven beloved grandchildren, Patrick (Ebony), Stephone, Kimathi, Alexis (Wendell), Derrick Jr. (Victoria), John Jr., Keenon, Kamau, Anthony Jr, Victoria, and Jacob; two precious great-grand children, Olivia and Matias and three bonus great-grandchildren, Taylor, Omir and Tyler; two brothers AC Johnson (Ann) and David Johnson (Charmaine); two sisters Charlene Johnson and Ida McElfresh; sister-in-law Joyce Clark, a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, and friends- including his best friend and former Chrysler coworker Coydell Cousert. Gene's legacy will continue to live on in the lives of his children, his grandchildren, as well as his extended family and lifelong friends, and anyone else, whose life he touched.

Sincerely,

The Family of Gene Johnson Sr.
