Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home & Crematory - Great Neck Chapel on Oct. 26, 2024.
Betty Shick was born near Bradford, Pennsylvania on August 8, 1929, to Ophelia and Clark Hackett. Everyone that she encountered thought that she was one of the sweetest, kindest people to walk on this earth. She had dimples on each cheek that were accented every time her beautiful smile shone through, which was often. Her laughter warmed your heart.
After graduating from Nursing school in 1950, countless patients saw firsthand the skill, love and encouragement that Betty showed in her years as a Private Duty Registered Nurse.
Betty's passion for gardening guaranteed that there were always flowers both inside and outside of our home. She would often pick up a leaf or stem of a plant and put it into dirt creating a new beautiful plant.
Betty also was an avid bird watcher. She always had regular bird feeders and hummingbird feeders to gain the close view of God's amazing little creatures. Squirrel watching was enjoyed at the same time.
The Christmas season was always met with great joy. You could feel the electricity of the excitement all season. Every room of the house had decorations, with the nativity scene as the center of attention. The Christmas tree was completely covered with ornaments including our childhood creations and other special ornaments. Betty's village scene was so extensive that special platforms were made to display the whole village.
Betty had a strong side to her as well. She helped build the first house that she and her husband owned, even going up on the roof to lay shingles and putting down the wooden floor. She jumped in to tackle any repair job that needed to be done when her husband was out of town for work.
Betty's love and encouragement, passion for plants and birds, love for the season of Jesus' birth, and strength has been embedded in her daughters, granddaughters and her great grandchildren. What a beautiful legacy to leave to those who loved her wholeheartedly.
Betty and Lige have been active members of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church since moving to VA Beach in 1973.
On October 23, 2024, while sleeping at home, Betty went up to Heaven into the loving arms of Jesus after being on this earth for 95 years. She was preceded in death by her brother Richard Hackett and son-in-law Michael Kodya.
Betty's loving memory will live through her husband of 74 years, Lige Shick, her daughters Dianna Gury and husband Steven, Jeanann Lacaze and husband Tony, her granddaughters Sarah Kodya, Melanie Weakley and husband Robert, and Elizabeth Kodya. She was blessed with 7 great grandchildren Noel, Tucker, Skyla, Harper, River, Lincoln, and Eleanor.
The Celebration of Life will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel Saturday November 2. Viewing is 3:00-4:00 with a service at 4:00 and sharing of stories to follow.
