Billy Don Day, 74, of Bevier, MO passed away Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Aspire Senior Living in Moberly, MO.
Bill was born south of Bevier on July 27, 1950, the son of Harold Eugene and Opal Maxine (Burk) Day. Billy worked as a coal miner for many years, then later traveled the world shaping golf courses. After retiring he continued operating heavy machinery, running a motor grater for Macon County.
Early in life Bill took pride in serving as President of the local United Mine Workers of America. He enjoyed the relentless pursuit of the elusive Whitetail Deer. Time spent hunting, playing pitch, and golfing with the Day brothers & Bailey boys created legendary experiences that he treasured. Bill was known for his faithful companion, Sport, a well-trained and loyal black lab. Because of Sport, Bill earned the title of "Dog Day" or "Papa Dog" from his friends and family.
Music was a vital part of his life. As a boy he sang with The Day's and The Compton's at church, revivals, and nursing homes. He never passed up singing at the Bevier Homecoming with his family. Witnessing Bill perform his rendition of "Tush" by ZZ Top, was evidence of his musical talent. He sang it at every opportunity and sang it well. Bill also played the guitar and mandolin. He loved pickin' and grinnin' with family to bluegrass and classic country.
Bill was an avid sports fan and often had a baseball game or golf tournament on TV. Throughout his life he enjoyed attending his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren's sporting events. Later in life Bill looked forward to after school Sonic cheeseburgers and playing catch with his great grandson.
Billy is survived by his three children, Christina (Day) Case and her husband Jim of Fulton, MO, Mendy Shriver and her husband Dennis of Liberty, MO, and Marion Davis Day of Blue Springs, MO; 12 grandchildren, Kimberly Case, Derek & Kaylie Teter, Stephanie Parker, A.K. Case, Ruby Case, Justin Case, Jacob & Willow Shriver, Garrett & Jacelynn Shriver, Kate Shriver, Bintu Shriver, Trey Shriver, and Mason Day; 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his one sister, Beverly Wyatt; three brothers, Bob Day, David Day, and Daniel Day; several nieces, nephews, in-laws and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Donna Day and his beloved Dog, Sport.
