Burton Whitley Hancock Jr. was born in Dublin, Georgia, on July 7, 1950. He passed away December 16, 2024, surrounded by the warmth of those who loved him most.
His fervent love for family was at the heart of his life, and his vibrant spirit extended far beyond, making him a friend to many. He was a loving brother to Judith Hancock Rosenberger and honorable son of Clara Jones and Burton Whitley Hancock. Burton was a devoted husband to Brenda Hancock and a cherished father to Hilary Hancock Phillips (Brian Phillips) and Meredith Hancock Lundell (Malachi Lundell). He reveled in his role as a proud Grandaddy to Ella Whitley Phillips and Aurora Kaida Arthur during the latter years of his robust life.
A lover of water, Burton spent joyful days lifeguarding, sailing, surfing, and fly fishing. These lifelong passions brought him peace and ultimately, they were his art. His life philosophy and spiritual-beliefs were grounded in his connection with nature and intimate faith in God. Burt’s pursuits in greater knowledge were the most powerful and influential aspects of his path in life.
A lifelong learner, teacher, and activist, he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of South Carolina. Attending USC in the 70s inspired a lifetime of advocacy for human rights and equality. He became a passionate and lifelong “Gamecock” fan, forever loyal to his alma mater. Thereafter, he committed to his pursuit of knowledge by procuring a master’s degree from Longwood College and ultimately, a Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University. Firmly believing that, “knowledge is the only tangible because it can never be taken from you,” reflected his guiding mantra. Burton used his fervor for education and intellect to pass his light on to others.
Burton’s legacy is one of intensity, kindness, passionate curiosity, wisdom, knowledge, adventure, and an unwavering devotion towards family and friends that will sustain and comfort his friends and loved ones. Creating meaningful experiences was his specialty. As a brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend or colleague, his memory and influence lives on within the hearts of many.
A private family service is planned this week and a Celebration of a Life Well-Lived will be held at a later date.
