C. James "Jim" Platt, 82 of Bedford, passed away in his sleep on September 1, 2024 at Meadow View Nursing Facility in Berlin, after battling dementia for the last few years. Known as Jim to those whom he met, he was born on August 1,1942 to Charles and Edna (Gamble) Platt. He joined the Army after graduating high school and was stationed at Fort Meade. While living at the base near Washington, D.C., he met Juanita (Lippincott) whom he married, nearly 60 years ago on September 5, 1964. In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his daughter, Kecia (Chuck Grohotolski) of Lancaster, PA and son Shannon (Meredith Morris) of Port St. Lucie, FL. He loved doting on and joking around with his grandchildren. Pappy will be sadly missed by: Ian and Kate Grohotolski and Caleb, Cooper and Elsie Platt. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Warren and Elda Lippincott, and his siblings Leroy, Donnie, Larry, Ellen (Vasbinder), Georgiann (Emerson), and Becky (Knipple). One sister, Penny (Neff) survives along with many nieces and nephews.
Jim worked in the plumbing and heating supply industry for most of his life, working at Williams and Company, Smith Hardware and Zimmerman's Hardware. Jim was an avid fisherman and loved telling people stories about this past time that he loved. In more recent years, he usually had a photo or two in his pocket, waiting for the opportunity to brag about his angling adventures.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at the Timothy Berkebile Funeral Home in Bedford, with Pastor Mike Benner officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Jim's family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to Pastor Mike Benner, as well as Jim's caring nursing teams at Heartland Hospice and Meadow View Nursing Center. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions in his memory to Fort Bedford Chapter of Trout Unlimited, PO Box 183, Bedford, PA 15522. A private casting ceremony of the ashes will be held at a later date.
