Carl Schomburg Obituary

Born July 6, 1928, in Brenham, Texas to Dennis W. and Margaret (Eckardt) Schomburg. He graduated from Brenham High School and Blinn College.  In 1949, he graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a BA in Sociology and was a member of the Texas Longhorn Band.  He later received his Master’s degree in Education and in 1966 he received his Doctorate in Education from the University of Houston.  Post graduate work followed at the University of Colorado and the University of Washington in Seattle.

He started his work career at Ripley House/St. Charles Settlements in Houston.  After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, he joined Anderson Clayton Co. in the foreign department.  From there he began teaching in the Deer Park School District.  He served as a classroom teacher, Reading Specialist and Assistant Principal.  Upon receiving his doctorate he became a Professor at the University of Houston.  He served as chairman of the Department of Elementary Education and received the outstanding service award from the College of Education. 

In 1967, he was selected to participate in the Tri-University Project at the University of Washington in Seattle.  The focus was on teaching the Social Studies in the United States and helped develop curriculum for the “new” Social Studies programs. He also taught for the Department of Defense in Germany as well as the Autonomous University of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Carl was married to Anne Jennings in 1959.  They traveled extensively around the world and enjoyed extended stays in their cabin in the mountains of Colorado.  Upon retirement they returned to Brenham, Texas.

During his University years, he published widely in professional journals and authored a textbook series for teaching Social Studies at the elementary school level.  He was active in many professional organizations and served as president of the Texas Council for the Social Studies.  He also served as found and President of the Greater Houston Area Reading Council and sponsor and President of Kappa Delt Pi, an honorary society in Education.  He retired as Professor Emeritus from the University of Houston.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Schomburg, nephews: David Schomburg, Mike Schomburg and Steven Hollister along with niece- Gale Paul. He was preceded in death by parents- Dennis W. & Margaret Schomburg and brother- Dennis Schomburg.

Family will have visitation from 5-6:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 7th at Memorial Oaks Chapel. He will have a Graveside Service at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 8th at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham, Tx.
