Charles Hollis "Chuck" Burrell, beloved member of the D'Hanis community, passed away late Saturday, Feb. 8, 2025, in San Antonio, TX. He was 72.
He was born Dec. 17, 1952, in Hondo, a son of Otis Herbert and Imelda Hulda Huser Burrell.
Chuck was a remarkable athlete during his high school years, graduating in 1971. He excelled in various sports, serving as a pitcher and shortstop in baseball, quarterback and linebacker in football, and also played basketball. His talents earned him a baseball scholarship to Beeville Junior College.
In addition to his athletic prowess, Chuck had a wide range of hobbies that included fishing, golfing, hunting, and skeet shooting. He was known for his infectious sense of humor and remained a jokester until the very end. Throughout his high school career, he received numerous accolades, including the coveted Eagle of the Cross Award.
Chuck will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of laughter, love and athleticism will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Chuck is preceded in death by his father and his brother, Robert Fred Burrell.
He is survived by his mother, Imelda Burrell of D'Hanis; daughters, Krystal Stukavec (John) and Ashley Schwedler (John), all of South Carolina, Charleah Villarreal (Felipe) of Hondo; son, Shawn Whitley of New Braunfels; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Dennis Burrell (Billie Ann), Spencer Burrell (Charlyn), all of D'Hanis, and Kenneth Burrell (Maripat) of Arizona; sister-in-law, Cindy Burrell of D'Hanis; the mother of his children, Jerri Whitley; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 13, at Guinn-Horger Chapel from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by graveside service at Holy Cross Cemetery, D'Hanis.
